My new Self Serve Egg stand

IrishLad, Thank you for your kind words. Not so much craftsmanship as just being cheap and using what I had on hand. Only bought the 2x4s, rest was already on hand from other projects.

My new Self Serve Egg stand

Ever since I started raising chickens for Eggs, I have been selling to my co-workers where I work. It started getting to be a chore to find enough customers to buy my abundance of eggs from my flock of about 30 hens. Earlier this spring, the company clamped down on people selling at work (I miss...

New hen house build, old trailer frame

Latest work on new coop, installing the pop door for the kids. I most always do it different then everyone else, this is door and frame for pop door. Love my local Goodwill After cutting out door opening, time to fasten door frame, had to be careful frame looks to made from plaster...

New hen house build, old trailer frame

Aart, No music stand came with the surplus pipes. Think I'll pass on making something decorative from smaller organ pipes, now thinking of making the nest topper from left over galvanized corrugated roof panels. Possibly cutting out chicken shapes with plasma cutter..... lots of possibilities!

Mary, I forgot about nest topper, thanks for the reminder. I'll have to come up something artsy and functional. Dan

New hen house build, old trailer frame

Here's some updates on our new hen house build. Still getting in an hour or so a day designing, building and painting. Mostly finished nest boxes made from pipe organ pipes. Still needs some paint on perches and sew up some privacy curtains from old feed bags. Shot of new paint on floor...

New hen house build, old trailer frame

All three of our [past] coops have been raised above ground, we like that they can be under and out of the weather. With it above ground, we have less to worry about digging predators getting in coop. The steel frame turned out to be the size we needed, besides I'm the king of using what's on hand!

New hen house build, old trailer frame

You may be right about nest quantity, we'll see what the girls think about it, easy to remove extra and toss in burn pile. Will be about a 3" lip to keep bedding/eggs inside as well as a perch in front so girls can see whats empty. Like your idea about setting nests at an angle, maybe I'll set...

New hen house build, old trailer frame

No worries about the tires, it's only traveling couple hundred feet to the Chicken ranch. I'll set on cement blocks and remove axle, will be open underside for rain/sun protection. I too wondered if the nest boxes are too short, they're about 10" high inside. If it turns out too short, I'll...

New hen house build, old trailer frame

Fellow at work asked if I'd like an old camp trailer frame to use as a utility trailer, being the packrat that I am..... That was last spring, placed the flatbed trailer in the chicken run (it's about 8k sqft), the 30ish birds loved it for shade from summer sun. Our existing coop (was a kids 5 x...

Want to introduce feed store chicks to broody before 21 days

Like it says, we have a hen that just went broody, we were expecting it to happen. We'd like to buy some feed store chicks to add variety to our 30ish hens and couple roo's. The question is, has anyone tried to introduce chicks to a broody before a normal 3 week incubation (we don't really want...

Possible broken leg from Hawk attack?

Our year and half old Cuckoo Marans "Piglet" who is a new mother to 7, 1 month old chicks she hatched out may have a broken leg. Came home this afternoon and found her hobbling on one leg. We were not able to look her over until this evening when time to go in for the night ( we free range our...

    21 week old Broody !

Guess I better finish out this thread. The one chick that started to hatch disappeared, vanished! We suspect a neighborhood cat jumped in the nest while mamma was on a potty break. Other eggs showed no signs of life and were thrown away at about 27 days. Now I did something half way through her...

    21 week old Broody !

I agree with you, we need to do nothing. As we're new to having our own flock (started Jan this year) we had no idea what to do. Cannot thank the group here enough for all the help and suggestions, I'm sure our free ranging flock of 10 hens and one rooster thank you too

    21 week old Broody !

Day 22, success! Peeked under "Gretta" and one egg is cracked and I can see the tip of a beak. No clue as to what we need to do (or not), I searched BYC and found a thread about assisted hatching https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching From what I've read so...
