Thank you for the reassurance, I've had 2 ag people say the same. Our home of Dixon is well, just had Cow Days where I once again did not win the cow:) Love it here, this will be our 10th winter. I ride with our neighbor and is now a problem getting out of our drive with horses, they're not fond...
Hello,
Our neighbor just put in 3 sows and a boar, and plans to put in 3 more sows. He says he's going to move the little ones to the other side of his property to raise for market. My concern is for run off. My property is below his, along with the other neighbors on the piglet side. His...
I use straw bales to insulate the outside of the coop during the Winter, in the Spring it all comes down and goes into my garden plots. It's my chickens job to scratch it down into proper soil of which they love. In the Summer planting season, it's all fenced off and they have to wait until the...
I just love this website, how fun to share treat ideas to spoil our chickens in the cold weather. My girls love warm oatmeal with raisins, and warm cornbread. Then again who doesn't?
There is only so much one can grow for the winter time, I supplement with cracked corn, less than 6 bucks per 50 lbs, simple and they love it. They tend to graze on what ever grass is still out in the fields. I have seen them eat kale which even in this cold weather is still out in the garden.
I don't use a heater, do much risk for fire and potential power loss. I do believe greatly in the deep litter method and I do line the coop with straw bales on the windward side. My chickens are bred more for the cooler weather than the warmer, but I did lose a Jersey Giant late in the winter...
According to Raising Chickens for Dummies," pullets that are going to be layers should be switched to layer feed with 16% protein and additional calcium and other nutrients at 18 weeks or when laying begins." I love the "For Dummies" series, I also have the books to help me when I started bees...
I have a 20'x 10' concrete slab in the yard behind the house. It was here when we bought the place, have no idea what they did with it but was perfect for my 16'x8' coop and run. Love it. No worries about digging predators. I use all purpose sand in the run, cleaning and replacing as the need...
Sounds to me like your doing a good job hopper hunting, I also hunt with my girls and they love it. Give it time, heat can do funny things to a little bird, and she's young.
I have heard of lots of different treats and supplements given to chickens but I personally have not heard of this one. Logically I would think that the fish oil is good for mammals but not really necessary for the health of poultry. From what I've learned is that chickens get all the nutrients...
There are different schools of thought as to worming chickens without signs of infestation. I wormed my chickens when they were younger to avoid what potentially could be bad news if they did get worms, now I don't because the molt timing, don't want to worm while their replenishing feathers...
