I have been successful in introducing a wounded hen back to a flock. The funny thing is that it wasn't her original flock! She was grown from a batch that I had ordered which arrived 2/21/11. She is a Delaware hen and her injury occurred when a RIR roo kept mounting her and pecking her head...
I am pretty jazzed at being able to start my BYC page. I live in the Midlands of South Carolina, just twenty minutes northeast of Columbia, our state capital. I am married (second) and have a teenage son (from first). I have several bros/sis' in the area and hope to give a lot of fresh eggs...
Thanks, jerseygirl1. I thought about moldy feed, but am using Dumor from TSC. Not saying a bad batch can't happen, I have had no issues since 2/2010 when this odyssey named chicken began! Would the local agricultural extension be able to do the necropsy? That WOULD help a great deal!

I heard once that chickens don't get sick, they catch diseases. I haven't seen any more with the mucus issue after the first one. The coop is brand new, built with my hands to my plans. These are the first ones to inhabit the coop. I agree that the nutrition is the least likely...
I have had 2 birds in my older flock die in the last 3 weeks. One had a large amount of nasal mucus and looked underweight and ragged as if feathers had dropped off (they had). Today another hen was found dead, though the last 2-3 weeks the birds have looked ok. My wife and cousin recently...
I have need of the combined wisdom of the BYC members due to some mysterious (or not so mysterious) ailment in my older flock. Recently (6-7 weeks ago) these birds were moved to a newer, more spacious coop from a smaller and dirtier one they had been in for 1.5 years. About 4 weeks ago I found...
I was sending out the pic I have of Nigel Tufnel... don't recall who he is? Why, today is Nigel Tufnel Day because it "goes to eleven". He was a character in the movie from 1982, "This is Spinal Tap", a rockumentary about this British heavy metal band that embarked on their most recent tour...
You certainly could expand your flock. I kept 12 hens in an 8' x 8' coop very comfortably for 1.5 years. Not that you would want to, but you have PLENTY of space, which is a very good thing! No critter likes being crowded. You got any pics?
I have had a very similar situation with my new coop, started in April this year. I have a couple of questions if I may...
!) did you use treated or untreated wood?, and B) did you stain with the chickens in the coop? Just trying to get as much info before attempting this NEEDED step!
BTW...
Fred's Hens :
Nice!!! Corny the Corn Flake rooster is a red sex link male, of course. They are handsome buggers.
Any idea what the white and brown rooster is, lineage wise??
I found packing crates for free on CraigsList. All ya have to do is slap a door on it and give em some ventilation. Also decorate inside, but there is room for three or four hens. I placed mine on a bunkbed frame and enclosed for a 4' x 8' run.
