Permit process approved! Now how to ask the neighbors??

My city just approved a permit process for obtaining chickens! That's headway..... The whole process involves written waste management and care schedule, scale drawings of coop and placement, written consent by adjacent neighbors, letters sent to all neighbors within 50 feet (with 20 days for...

    How pretty are these eggs??

I'm 98% percent sure I won't, but I'm drooling over the day I'll have such chocolatey dark and speckly eggs like those!

    How pretty are these eggs??

My chicken dreams are on hold this summer (local politics and still trying to figure a coop).... However, I'm almost tempted to try a cheap incubator just for these eggs.... what do you think...

TSC and Country Max minimums... back to the drawing board...

Would they let me pay for 6 and just "forget" a couple in the brooder? We foster dogs for a local rescue so I completely get the "screen out the impulse buyers" thing... you should see our adoption application and process! But I think it should be a little less complicated to get just 3 or 4!

TSC and Country Max minimums... back to the drawing board...

I've been checking CL diligently for coops and chicks for months! Nada.... If I saw more chick postings I might have bought the six at TSC or Country Max and put the others out on CL myself... When I went to TSC they had red production hens and SLWs (straight run), and ducks... Country Max only...

TSC and Country Max minimums... back to the drawing board...

We originally ordered chicks from Meyer, but canceled when we thought we wouldn't be ready for them in time. Well, I figured I would be able to get some between Country Max and TSC..... I didn't realize there's a NY state imposed 6 bird minimum for every purchase! Back to the drawing board...

Quick question - do you count the exterior nesting box for sq footage?

Thanks for the input! When you're looking on such small scale, the nest box can be like 50% of the main area dimensions.... That would be the difference between 6 ft sq or 9 ft square....

    Formex snap lock coop?

Does anyone know anything about these? Looks really small, but might be ok for two birds? http://snaplockchickencoops.com/ There's no price listed, but if it's about the same price as the wood prefabs it at least looks durable? I can't seem to find any other info online (and only 100 "likes"...

Quick question - do you count the exterior nesting box for sq footage?

Thanks for taking a moment to answer my quick question! I'm looking at prefab coops (i know, i know), and as expected they're all ridiculously small for the amount of birds they say they'll hold. When calculating the capacity of a coop, do you count the interior square footage of the nesting...

    Old furniture turned coop?

I finally ordered some chicks to come this spring and need a smallish coop for 4 hens. Has anyone tried modifying and weatherproofing furniture into a chicken coop? I'm thinking something like a chest of drawers or dresser? If I can find one for ~$50 and spend about the same on a run, I'll...

    I ordered! *gulp*

Ok, so after months of research and thinking and trying to talk my husband into it... I went ahead an finally ordered some chicks! We'll be outlaws, so I'm keeping it small and will have to be very, very clean and tidy about it. A little nervous. I ordered from Meyer and will be getting four...

Help! Chickens provided for in Code, but no one to issue permit?

Quote: there you have it. do not suggest changing the code, if you do that you open a public hearing and then you will have opponents who envision flocks invading their paradise. if the Mayor says just do it, then do it and keep quite. so long as your neighbors are on board you will be fine. I...

    NY chicken lover!!!!

Quote: I emailed the Mayor, so maybe he'll want to help keep a constituent happy? I enclosed a photo of a setup similar to what I'd like, which is just a little elevated barn coop (maybe 4'x4') with a fully enclosed, attached run of probably 4'x8'. I want to dispel any paranoia that I'm...
