When is it too cold for ducks? - it's freezing in Portland, OR

Duck slaves, LOL! Glad I am not alone here! Well....Daffodil, the rescued duck (with a shattered hip) does not have another duck to cuddle with. You know, the vet painted a grim picture for her...she said the only reason she wasn't putting her down was because of her will to live, that she...

    Daffodil's new digs

Right now we have a mirror in there for her, and sure enough, she does stick pretty close to that mirror. I tried putting toys in with her, but she wanted nothing to do with them. The avian vet wasn't sure that she would do as well as she has, and she said that if she got better she could...

    Daffodil's new digs

As soon as I get my graphics software reloaded (thanks to Mcafee my computer crashed), I will post a photo of Daffodil's new quarters, which was designed based on all of the wonderful advice I received here. Cannot thank everyone enough. Started out with a Doc Bob steel wire kennel from...

Happy Birthday to MicroDuck! I owe a lot to the folks on this board, too. Daffodil is thriving due to all of the good advice.

How much sqr. feet per duck?

Ducks, while adorable, are VERY messy. Isn't that the truth?! I was actually looking at dog runs for the duck this afternoon. She's on the porch now, and locked in a heavy-duty carrier at night for protection, but with the coyotes and dogs around here, I think it will be a battle putting her...

    Duck communications

With the runners, they also have a stand-up-straight, quack loudly greeting that roughly seems to translate to, "what goodies did you bring us?" So cute!

    Duck communications

Thank you, SL, that helps! A couple of days ago, Daffodil was evidently distraught. Lots of head-bobbing and quacking. A couple of hours later, we found a neighbor's adolescent bird-dog was roaming the property. I am hoping the head-bobbing was because of the dog and not me. As a side...

Does anyone know what tail shaking means? And what about heading bobbing (female in this case)? Little squeaky noises? Thanks!

Please help hurt duck cant stand up

Is she well enough to try putting her in water today to see if she can swim? SC probably has a ton of good advice.

What is it with Vets and Birds???

Nicely said about respect. I'm fairly new here, as you can see. I rescued a duck from the farm pond across the road. She and two of her two cohorts were dumped there by someone, although we know for certain where one of them came from (an Indian Runner (?) bought for a child for Easter), no...

Please help hurt duck cant stand up

KL, I am sorry about your little duck! I bumped up the "Duck Rescue" thread for you with my experience in the last couple of weeks with a lame duck. Is your duck sort of pushing herself around? She may be in the same boat as Daffodil. Daffodil has an arthritic hip. Can she swim OK?
