Mary! Good to hear from you! I've post stalked the emu board a few times and had read that you had your girls now. I still have KnockKnock, she's quite the character. The breeding pair are laying their second batch of eggs this season. I'm not incubating any though... I have about 16 to blow...
Oh! I hadn't heard that we had a chicken war! Ray'll probably be at our crab banquet volunteer thank you dinner in a few weeks... should I behave and not mention it to him? Probably not good to try to give him a nervous tic!
I think another person up here may have told me you'd bought and...
WOW! You are exactly right about where I am! I haven't talked with Mary in about a year but stalked the emu thread a while back.
Are you off the opposite side of the road from Gray's? Moved up here a couple of years ago? Or am I thinking of someone else..,

Hello chicken peeps!
While I've been a member of BYC for a few years, it's been awhile since I've been "here". Took a bit of a break from incubating and hatching chickens and turkeys, but just set a tray of eggs last Friday.
I'm about midway between Placerville and Jackson and have Midget...
Yep, with emus it's the male who sits on the nest for roughly 56 days. They're such fascinating creatures to me, so inquisitive and prehistoric looking. And I *think* there's another hatchling this morning :D
Enoch, my wonderful brooder boy, came through again this year! Today, 4 of the cutest emu chicks hatched, plus there are still 4 eggs under him. It's an emu chick jackpot! I'm already sad thinking that two of them will move to a new home this weekend. Since they're going to a relative nearby...
I bought feed yesterday and saw several pallets of both crumbles and pellets in the pink Purina bags. I save my feedbags but usually just to use for barn trash.
I'm about an hour east of Sacramento, CA, maybe the pink bags will make their way to more feed stores soon.
Funny thing about being spoiled... She didn't start out that way! But, "someone" bought her a real nice leopard print Snuggie, put TOYS in her crate, and let her watch Judge Judy on TV. So now she has a real nice coop, 4 feathered coopmates, and she's still looking for her satellite TV...
Yesterday I came pretty close to calling you and telling you to come get BirdBrain... um, I mean KnockKnock!
When we're out on the property she is free to roam about. Usually she stays close or at least comes to us when we whistle for her. Last night? Nooo, she chose to take off into the...

I usually start getting eggs in December. The emus Mary has hatched from my birds in late March, and KnockKnock hatched from an incubated egg in early March.
How old are your birds?

I was stunned when I opened the envelope and read "female" on the certificate. Male/female... it didn't really matter to me, but we have just always referred to KK as he. The irony of it all... that you originally had her for a couple of weeks.
If you don't find a female before next breeding...
officially a "she". For 5 months now, "he" kept quiet, never correcting us for our incorrect gender assessment . Since the name KnockKnock is gender neutral we won't be changing her name. My other pet name for her, BirdBrain, still fits as well
