California - Northern

I'm so glad to hear positive news. I was thinking about you all day.....unfortunately, I got a call from a very good friend yesterday...it was my birthday so I thought she was calling to wish my Happy Birthday....she said she has breast cancer. I'm going with her Monday to find out her options.

I know this sounds really selfish but I lost my 40 year old brother to cancer 4 years ago and I really can't wrap my mind around taking that journey again.....Molly, I'll be sending continued prayer that you continue on a healthy path and that all your chicks hatch!!!!
So sorry to hear about your friend. I hope they get it all.

And Happy Birthday.

The Capay Valley Almond Festival is today.  http://www.espartoregionalchamber.com/almondfestival.aspx

I will be selling olive oil & eggs next to the Guinda Fire Station, where they are serving bbq'd oysters. The Marshall Law Band will also be playing there. All kinds of things to see & do all through the valley, today.

If you make the trip, stop by and say hi. :)

I'll see if I can stop by. I'd love to meet more chicken people. It may be a hard sell for my husband though. The last time we were in Guinda, a farmer called the sheriff out to give us a parking ticket. We didn't know we were illegally parked and he is still mad. Haha. Hope we can stop by!

Does anyone know Debra Hogan? Owns Elverta feed and is a member of the Ameraucana club?
says she has Brown-Red Ameraucana would like some of these for the layer flock along with some of Chickee's Wheaten x buff ee cross.

Hello chicken peeps!

While I've been a member of BYC for a few years, it's been awhile since I've been "here". Took a bit of a break from incubating and hatching chickens and turkeys, but just set a tray of eggs last Friday.

I'm about midway between Placerville and Jackson and have Midget White and Bourbon Red turkeys, BCM's, Barnevelders, Ameraucanas, and olive eggers. Oh, emus too.

It's great to see so many posts from local people!

Hellos and welcome! A great place to learn.

There is so much room for my girls now and someday I plan to expand my animal entourage to include alpacas or llamas...

We have six alpaca and the one llama (and a bunch of sheep). He is the best pasture protector. The neighbors have all lost fully grown sheep, we've never (knock on wood) even lost a lamb.

Jason, when you get your Pene chick, I have a few Araucana chicks you can have. They aren't going to make the cut for show, but if they're girls, they will lay beautiful blue eggs. I have three that are around a week old and another pipped this morning. I was going to CL them as EE, but you can have them if you are interested.

I bought hatching egg from her. They were very reasonably priced. PapaBrooder has purchased eggs from her too.

Someone said she had an illness with some of her chickens but hopefully hat is taken care of now.

One Crele Pene hatched at 10 last night and three more hatched over night. One more might hatch. The last egg was one that looked like a quitter--left it in just in case.

One looks very light and is bigger than the other three. The other three are very brown, but they are still wet. I will post pictures when they are fluffed up more.

Nice to "meet" you, I'm in Shingle Springs.

Love your alpacas, have always wanted one or two. Do you keep them for the fiber or do you breed? That llama looks like he is smiling, too cute!

Good(?) morning all

Tragedy struck in my chick nursery last night. All of the chicks are active and eating/drinking except the 5 golden campine girls. 4 of them have died, one is still holding on, but I don't have much hope for her. I think it would have been better if the hatchery had substituted Lakenvelders for all of them, not just 5. I called them this morning and left a message, since there is the 48 hour window to alert them to problems, so hopefully they will get back to me tomorrow morning. Sad, sad, sad..........

I will see if I can convince Duckie to drive over to Guinda to get some farm-like atmosphere.

Clucks, coos, and drooping feathers
