    Could this be wry neck?

About a month ago, my 11 week old silkie started shaking and weaving its head every so often. Not constantly, but there were seven episodes in a ten minute period yesterday. When this is not happening, it happily goes about its chicken life, eating, drinking and foraging. I would like to treat...

eleven week old silkie weaves its head

My one surviving silkie of 4 feed store chicks does a weird thing. Occasionally, it weaves and shakes its head back and forth. It looks neurological. Is there something else I should be thinking of or worrying about? I am happy to keep it as long as it is living a good quality of life and not...

    Hen or roo and breed?

This is a 13 week old... something. I have a definite rooster from this assorted straight run batch, and 3 definite hens, but am not sure about this one. What is making me think roo in part is the THICKNESS of the legs and I am seeing a little arc to the tail feathers that is making me wonder.

    lice!!!

My coop is 7x6x6. I ended up getting the 3 pack of 1 lb each of Sevin and some DE coming. The only thing I can't find is how MUCH I use. My flock of 15 have lice--or at least one does, so I assume everyone needs treating. Do I just sprinkle it like carpet cleaner when the coop is clean? Also, I...

    The Olive-Egger thread!

I am coming here as a total newbie to introduce myself and hopefully get some feedback on a backyard breeding project I'd like to try. This photo is "Bright", my 13 week old rooster hatched from a woman who is breeding BCM and Wheatens to get olive eggers. I bought 8 of her fertilized eggs to...

    Hen or roo?

Yes it seems like the day after I took that photo, his tail feathers developed into such an obvious arc. So far, he's a sweet one. Thanks everyone for chiming in, and for the info on olive egging and the link. I'm excited to give it a try and see what we get!

    Hen or roo?

So I'm going to keep him. My hope is to breed him towards achieving olive egger hens. I have in my flock already 4 lovely light blue laying Easter Eggers and one BCM hen who lays a chocolate egg. Luckily I have silkies too who are perpetually broody and will hatch whatever I give them. I am new...

    Hen or roo?

Oh dear. What's the giveaway? The tail feathers? Maybe he will be one of those quiet, gentle, benevolent roosters who uses his leadership wisely, is docile with the family, loving and protective with his hens, and doesn't annoy the neighbors. They exist, right?

    Hen or roo?

    I just counted. H/she is 13 weeks.

    Hen or roo?

I let my silkies hatch out eggs from a breeder who is trying for olive eggers (with Ameraucana/Auracanas and Marans.) "Bright", who we thought might be a Wheaten, hatched on June 19th. Now his/her legs are really thick and even developing a bit of feathers, and I'm getting a little nervous...

    Buff Brahma one swollen eye

Thank you, this is really helpful. Today is no better, no worse, but nothing noticeable with her breathing/eating/laying patterns. I don't have TSC near here but will call my vet about Tylan tomorrow. I've been doing neosporin, just in case that will help, on the affected eye. What do you think...

    chicken with swollen eye

I hope that happens here. Today, no better, no worse. I'm putting triple antibiotic cream on it but we have no tractor supply to get the injectables. I'm calling the vet tomorrow to see if she has. Thanks for the support!

    Buff Brahma one swollen eye

My son's favorite chicken, our beloved Buff Brahma (9 months old) woke up with a swollen eye this morning. I took some photos. Only swollen on one side (the other one is in pictures for comparison.) I am reading some scary stuff on here about diseases that could cause this. She is otherwise...
