I wish I had designed my hen house with access to the three nest boxes from outside the enclosed hen area so I could get eggs without putting on yard shoes to avoid the chicken poops. I found great design on line but I didn't think about removing the eggs daily without being in their area. The...
The Foundation.
Windows for light and air.
Nest boxes were a major step.
Siding is a must. Vertical might have been a better choice.
Almost done.

The latest effort to give em some room to roam and still be protected.

In late 2007 my wife got me to read “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” by Barbara Kingsolver, about her family eating only local food for a whole year. I was really impressed with the book, but what caught my attention was the author's daughter ordering...
I am getting 7 or 8 new Ameracuna chicks and wondered how exact the temperature needs to be. Our books indicate a start of 95 for day or two old chicks and going down by 5 degrees each week.
We were able to get to 95 a few years ago by using a 250 watt heating bulb but we did it in a spare...
I have a one year old Rhode Island Red with one bent toe. The bent toe doesn't appear to make any difference at all to her but it does help me tell Porscha from Phoebe (the other RIR)
My favorite of my flock of Reds, Wyandottes, Barred Rocks, One Ameracuna and Buff Orpingtons is the Orpingtons. Very calm and friendly. Very good egg layers. Pam the Ameracuna is standoffish but the green eggs are a great source of wonder to all. Good luck with your flock.
One thing I have learned thur this site is every city/county has different rules on poultry and sheds. In Charlotte, the shed is easy and no rules really apply if the cost is under some number of thousands. Not hard to stay under that. We do need a poultry permit and we can apply on line. I send...
We picked up 14 about 9 weeks ago. They were in a small box and we drove a little over an hour home with no ill effects for the chicks. We did dip the beaks at home and they have grown so much I really can't believe it! Good luck to you and your new chicks.
We live in the middle of Charlotte, NC in a subdivision and wanted to try a few chickens as pets. The local laws only ask that the hen house be set back 10 off property lines. We decided to not have a rooster to stay quiet for the neighborhood. Our 10 hens are now 8 weeks old and loving their...
I'm going through the same drama. I put my first chickens ever out two days ago around noon in their new house. They are 7 weeks old and I had left the lights out in their old room (in our house) for a couple of days to get them used to the dark.
They did panic and bunch up the fist two nights...
