Does anyone know anything about this breed? I'm crazy in love with the name of it and I'd love to find out more. I've only seen it referenced by UK authors.
I've been waiting a long time for my Blue Cuckoo Marans to give me an egg and today was the day. It was just a bitty thing, pale in color, but a beautiful sight nonetheless. I don't know if the eggshells will get darker (like terracotta) because she is a blue cuckoo, but I'm just glad she...
I warmed a batch up with some milk for the girls this AM. We'll see if they eat it up or not. It's so cold this morning, I thought it might be appealing to them as a warm treat.
My henhouse is a chalet style, raised above the ground house about 9 feet square. I have three hens (RIR, Marans, Black Sexlink). The house is made of plywood, has tarpaper and cedar shingles for a roof, and pine shavings on the floor. I'm wondering if I need to worry about heating it. It can...
Hmmmm, I think it is the Washington weather . Mine are 21 and 22 weeks. We had sporadic egg laying 3 weeks ago and now all we find are feathers

Oh that's a sad thought. Waiting until spring? Ugh.

Thank you for this link. My girls are approximately 22-24 weeks (not sure on age because I didn't raise them from hatching) and they have red wattles and yellowing feet, so I've been expecting something any day. All I'm getting are lots of full size feathers in the coop and hen house.
It's weird because she has stopped using the wing. I watched her today and she jumped up on a chair - she flapped the good (and clipped) wing but didn't flap the droopy/unclipped wing at all. Otherwise, it doesn't seem to bother her or cause her any pain. It's very odd.
My black sexlink has one wing that she seems to be holding lower than the other and she isn't using it to flap. I held her yesterday and gave it a bit of a prodding, which caused no reaction from her, so I don't think it is broken. Can chickens sprain their wings or have some other reason that...
I have a Marans and a RIR that should have started laying by now but haven't. I've noticed feathers all over the place and I'm wondering if they went straight to molting and skipped laying. Is that possible? There is still plenty of sunlight here in Washington, so I'm surprised that they would...
Could anyone help me figure out my black sex-link, pictured below? She had a lot of brownish feathers on her chest but her back feathers are black with a green sheen. Her shape looks like a RIR to me. Any ideas? Thanks!
I just purchased a "brown-black sex-link" pullet. Could anyone help me figure out what kind of combination she might be? Her chest feathers have tons of brown but the feathers on her back are black with a greenish cast.
She's with her roomies in the photo, the RIR and the Marans.
Thanks!
It's been warm but she seemed to be coping alright with the heat (better than me!). Their coop is raised up so it would be difficult for a snake to get inside and I'm not sure we have those kind of snakes in Washington. She didn't seem too happy about the new bird but there weren't any big...
My 15 week old buff orpington died overnight and I have no idea why. She was seemingly healthy, eating, no issues at all. The only new thing is we introduced a new bird yesterday morning and maybe the shock of it was too much for her? She had been around the bird all day and there had been...
