Thank you for all the advice. Since this little chick is most likely just a few days old, it sounds like, unless I have a broody hen, it will be a no go.
We have four hens, about three years old. A neighbor wants to get rid of one chick and no one will take it. Is there any way I can get one of my hens to accept the chick? I've only ever had this one flock and we raised those 5 from chicks (one was attacked by a hawk and died at 2 years old, so...
Hi there. We have our first chickens ever. Got them when they were 1 day old, and now they're about 22 weeks. They're not laying, and I was wondering if that's normal. They have 3 nesting boxes with shavings in their coop. We're still feeding them the grower pellets since I thought you didn't...
Our chicks are about 2 months old, and so far haven't seen them even attempt a dust bath. They have shavings in their coop, and they get to run around the yard for a bit each day. There are some woods where they scratch in the leaf litter, but no attempt to dust bath. Do I need to make a dugout...
Okay, can this be right? Chicks seem to be okay out in the sun when temps are in the mid- to upper-40's. Not puffed up or anything. Inside coop temps are around 70 (heat lamp and space heater in there). Chicks seem fine. They're 4 weeks old. So they know best or am I risking their health?
I THINK you're supposed to reduce temp by 5 degrees each week. I wound up just watching the chicks and adjusting temp based on behavior: avoiding lamp = reduce heat, all under lamp = increase heat, everyone wandering aimlessly = just right!
You know, the funny thing is, I'm not a super-neat person. And now that they're outside, I miss them! Is that weird?
Anyway, I'm just south of Portland. And spring is mostly here finally...maybe I shouldn't've said that?....I think I see snowflakes.
We put our girls out in the coop today, but since it's Maine and winter won't let go, they're out there with lots of shavings, half of their brooder box, and a 250w red heat light. I left the pop hole open today (overcast, windy, yucky) and the temp inside was a toasty 75-80 degrees which is...
d.k :
*but, kids show always be trained how to handle a chicken (meaning esp. keeping them UPRIGHT)
Maybe a bit off topic, but what happens if you turn chicks upside-down?
I'm new to this, but I decided "doing what they're supposed to do" is the real gauge. I moved my 250w red light from over their brooder to out in the coop to test it for the big move, and now have a 60w white light over their brooder (in my dining room). After MUCH chirping and trilling, they've...
Okay, so I'm getting the coop ready to move the girls out as soon as winter really leaves, and I saw lots of "DE" posts. For the litter, in the food, dust baths... My questions are:
1. when do the chicks need the DE?
2. Do I just sprinkle it in the food?
3. Does it go into the bedding...
@migocontodos~ :
I got all standards so I put a walking board in front of the nest so the girls can enter the nest easier !
Forgive my ignorance (I'm pretty new to this), but what's a walking board?
