Yeah, I know all about the laws. But my girls come first. They have been locked up since and they hate it. There coop/run is huge but they arnt free range per say. Sigh...
True, last time it was a fox and there was a mess left behind though. So strange, I plan on going further back in the woods this weekend to check for more evidence. Who ever the feather belongs to has been hanging out there for a while tho, there is a branch that it perches on either in the day...
one of my girls was taken while free ranging the other evening. It was starting to become dusk out not quite though. She was near the woods with the rest. I didn’t see or hear a commotion but they all went to the coop and I did a head count and right away I knew one was missing. After much...
Good to know, our hens will eat rats and mice as well. Ive seen it and it is terrible! I will keep that in mind though. For now our problem is gone. Thank goodness!
Ok so I will tell you what we did. We had the same issue, unfortunately we also live near a small trash collection site so I am sure it didnt help. Ok so we started by completely sealing our coop, removing all food/water. Only having it outside during the day and sealing it up at night. We still...
Update, everyone is doing well and she is super protective of them. She allows me to touch them but that's about it. A twist to the story is, she left the last egg yet to hatch on the best. It was cold and honestly though it was a dud. Well it got its beak a part of the way through the shell and...
Thanks everyone! Yes she made her nest on the floor in a hidden corner. So that helps. Just checked this am and all are well. She let's me get close and look but the others are staying away it seems bc she goes nuts when they come near. I just have to set up a barrier for mamma and the babies so...
Well that makes me feel a bit better. I just went to TS and got baby food for them. This is def a new experience letting her do the work, I'm used to bringing them in for 2 months. I sure hope they will be ok out there. I already added a heat lamp in my barn and my girls have been loving it the...
Haha yes chicken math.... So I've heard. Of course she will keep them until they can be seperared. I cld never pull them apart. I have a full sized barn that they all use. I just have to find a way to separat them. My rooster is a meanie and will go after them as soon as he knows they are there.
I just did that!! Personally idc id keep them but my other half is chickened out. I have 2 of them spoken for but not until they get a bit bigger. Sheesh when a hen is determined she gets her way for sure
:idunnomy broody sexlink hen ”Pepper” kept sitting on eggs, stealing others eggs and try her darndest to hatch them. I took her off multiple times, threw out the eggs and tried my best to snap her out of it. I already have 13 chickens and that is plenty for what I need. Well she is a great hider...
Thats what happened to us, we would scare the fox away in the day and she would come back at night. I tracked her movements and trails on my cameras. Then I put down traps and caught her. Fox are opportunistic hunters, I didn’t want her getting lucky. Hopefully that fox will leave your chickens...
