    Minnesota!

Wow, I didn't realize there were people so close to me with chickens! I'm in the Otsego/Albertville/Monticello area. A get together would be so fun.

    Do Chickens Speak Catbird

Catbirds are so snoopy! They like to stick their beaks in everywhere. When we were building our coop/run the catbird would sit in the bushes and meow. When we would leave to get more supplies or water to drink, it would hop all over looking at what we had done. I wouldn't be surprised if it...

    Puffy, lethargic hen

Thank you for your reply, Mountain Peeps! I think Buffy was egg bound. She passed a "covert egg" that I didn't find until I was cleaning up after she recovered. I think the warm soak helped her move it. I'm not sure about the seizure, but today she was back to 100% normal. Thank you for...

    Puffy, lethargic hen

I took the girls out this morning and Buffy stepped out of the coop and did this: She just stands like this, head lowered, tail raised. She closes her eyes now and again. This is not normal for her at all. She's usually one of our most active and interactive hens. What I know: She went...

2 of my 9 RIR's chicks are very strange

Oh, I'm so sad! I'm sorry for your loss. :( Man, they didn't look sickly, they just looked little. It's too bad you can't find out what it was. HUGS!!!

2 of my 9 RIR's chicks are very strange

My RIR was the tiniest chick, she's still our smallest hen, but she's a consistent, every day layer. They look adorable and not sickly at all, they should be fine. It does look like down.

    Minnesota!

UGH, enough with the rain, already! My girls need wellies and raincoats. This winter was bad enough and now a week of cold rain? Mother nature has it out for us. Stay dry, MN peeps!!

Two hens with crusty combs (photos)

Here's the story: This was an awful winter in MN, it was so cold that our Australorp lost part of her comb from frostbite. In January my RIR and Buff Orp developed white comb tips that progressed down the RIR's comb. I was pretty sure that they were going to lose part of their combs, too...

    Minnesota!

We can only have hens in our area and we're only looking for one, so I guess I would be willing to take an older pullet. I'll have to ask my daughter. Thank you for your reply! I'll let you know if she agrees.

Does anyone have Swedish Flower Hen chicks? My daughter would like to add one to our flock. I know the difficulty of adding only one hen to a flock, but we only have 4 girls. My daughter will work with them to integrate her into the flock. I'm in the Elk River area. Thanks!

What's the most dependable laying breed in your flock?

My EE started laying on 1/26 and has missed 1 day. She is by far the most reliable layer that I have. And her eggs are beautiful!
