Complete newbie - building our coop now need info on BEST fencing

HI My 'Fort Knox' run is made with 2"x4" welded wire from top to bottom including parts of the roof (some of the roof is covered for bad weather). We then used chicken wire to close the holes - but I find chipmunks can still get in. We used the hardware cloth only for the apron and about 2...

    when can I move chicks?

Hi I have a special integration pen I put in the regular run. I use it while they are younger than about 12 weeks old for them to be outside with everyone else. They can see the older ones and the older ones can see them. But they go back into the brooder at night. That way I control the...

    I have to talk POLISH!

Thank you for all the information I will look into it and see. We have not changed her diet at all. They have had the same food (Blue Seal organic Layer) since she was 20 weeks old. Hmm, hormones and seasonal changes - I actually dont think she has laid an egg in a while. Thank you for...

    I have to talk POLISH!

I just read that thread. It is interesting that many of those birds changed over the years. She is only 2 and made this change in 1 molt. I wonder what she will be like in a year. I guess I do know. The white is almost silver. Thanks

    I have to talk POLISH!

Here is the photo of my Silver Laced Black Polish girl who has suddenly gone white. This has happened in the last month. Wish I could find an older photo. But she was all black with silver lacing. Her pom used to be mostly black with white tips. And her tail is all white now. Anyone seen...

    I have to talk POLISH!

My flock free ranges for part of the day. That being said the breed I have lost the most to hawks are my Polish. 3 so far this year. But they love to be out there, and pace back and forth in the run if I dont include them. Now that we have leaves, I dont think it will be an issue. I should...

    I have to talk POLISH!

Hi All I have a Silver Laced Black polish girl, nothing special, who is almost 2 years old and molting. The strange thing is that all her new feathers are coming in completely white. Its as if she has lost her black pigment on her new feathers. Has anyone ever heard of this? I am trying to...

    hen or a roo? very sad : - (

I had a BR chick that got a comb VERY early. I thought for sure she was a roo. But I waited and her comb grew but did not turn red until all the other girls. At 20 weeks she started laying eggs. But her comb was huge at just 4 weeks. So yes dont start to worry yet. Wait and see!

    Mystery Deaths

I had a similar issue two years ago with Polish chicks from the same breeder. I lost all five from that breeder but over an 8 month period. (FYI I had 14 other birds do just fine over the same period). I had most go in a similar fashion but the one cockerel was strange. He was on a roost in...

A BEE thread....for those interested in beekeeping.

Hello I installed a hive yesterday by myself, I am a relative newbie. Now looking at the pictures in the book I may not have taken the cork out of the queen's package. I took the otherside off. My question is, should I wait the full week to see if she is out, or should a wait a few days...

What is your Chicken's Favourite Food? (List 3 only)

My peeps prefer 1. Meal Worms 2. Noodles (aka fake worms) - this may be #1 as its so funny to watch them chase each other thinking they have worms. 3. ANY melon I give my chickens scraps (Except potatoes) every day. They love them.

Lost a chicken to my dog :(

My dogs were exposed to the chicks from the day they (chicks) came home. It was always in a controlled manner. Age doesn't matter for the chickens IMHO, I personally think earlier is better. I have a Great Pyrenees and a cocker spaniel and both are good with them now. We got our first chicks...

Do roosters suddenly turn aggressive at a certain age?

This is VERY critical. I have pretty tame roosters. Someone here posted about how to tame roosters and this was the best advice I received. I picked up my roosters all the time and looked them straight in the eye until they looked away. We did this daily until they were well over 20-30 weeks...
