I have to talk POLISH!

Well I turned loose my polish roo out of quarantine yesterday with my free range flock. There is no way I will be free ranging polish haha. You can tell its just not in their blood. I guess I will make him a polish pen. He spent most of the time running in circles scared of every noise. At roost time he was running in a small circle non stop till I caught him. Although I may use him to breed my own free rangeable polish type chickens. A project like this would be my goal.  http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGK/OldPol/BRKOldPol.html

It may take him a bit to adjust. All my polish free range during the day without any problems.

Mine free range ok---eat grass--but bugs are hard for them to spot--but I really worry about predators, they are so slow due to their vision handicap. I had a hawk fly over yesterday and the others scattered and my two polish just stood there wondering what the deal was with the others, they were totally clueless. I love them so much and they really are my favorite, but they are not too bright or quick with things like that.

Maybe pen him up with one or two of your hens for a week and then let him free range with them to follow around. I'd trim his crest so he can see too. You don't have to cut it drastically but just a little around his eyes. Poor guy, must have been terrifying for him.

Mine are among the three best foragers/free ranging of my breeds. The most common reasons a Polish may not be are being new, being one of the few or only crested birds in a flock, and/or being of badly bred stock. To help their vision you can always tie up the crest or trim it.

My polish free range in my back garden, they love it, I keep them with some silkie so I get broodys.
What sort of Predators / hawks do you have?! Can they catch your polish? the only thing round here that eat chickens are Foxes, and they keep to themselves

My flock free ranges for part of the day. That being said the breed I have lost the most to hawks are my Polish. 3 so far this year. But they love to be out there, and pace back and forth in the run if I dont include them. Now that we have leaves, I dont think it will be an issue.

I should also mention that my rooster is Polish and he is great at giving the girls a warning.

Still working on that white girl's photo too.

I have been free ranging chickens for a while now. I tend to lose them to early morning predators. But since my wife now lets them out at noon that has reduced loss almost completely.
