    Egg laying

I'm from Massachusetts and have 8 hens, five different breeds. They stopped laying about a month and a half ago, due to the shorter days and they also had their first molt. I don't use supplemental light, I just let them have their winter time off to recoup. I also feed them Purina layer pellets...

    Still getting small eggs

I have 8 chickens, 2 Barred Plymouth rocks, 2 White Plymouth rocks, 2 RIR's, 1 New Hampshire red and 1 Black australorpe. They have been laying since October of 2013. I get about 6 to 7 eggs daily, give or take an egg. About half of the eggs are large to extra large and the other half are small...

Turn A 3 or 5 Gallon Bucket Into A Waterer! These are Great!

I looked at these also, but wasn't sure how hard it would be to have to turn a 50 pound bucket with water over without the red base coming off or spilling it everywhere. Does it work allright for you.

Need help with a 5 gallon waterer I made.

Can't seem to load any pictures for some reason. I drilled 1 hole 1/2" dia. and it did not work, I then drilled 2 more holes around the pail for a total of 3 and the water would not come out. The holes are below the level of the tray that it sits in, but the vacuum won't let the water come out...

Need help with a 5 gallon waterer I made.

Made a 5 gallon waterer from posts on this site. Can't seem to get it to work right. I used the bottom of a small blue barrel and cut it down to an appropriate height. Got a 5 gallon bucket with a lid and drilled 3 holes around the lip of the bucket. When I filled it with water and turned it...

First egg today , Very exciting!!!

I had just posted a thread yesterday about when I should open up my nest boxes to the chickens. I have an exterior nest box on the coop and had a piece of plywood over the hole, as I had not finished the inside of the boxes yet. I spent most of the morning trimming out the nest boxes, putting in...

The girls hated the oatmeal so what other foods for cold days?

You put the jar at a 45 degree angle upside down, (open end with cheesecloth or whatever down) so that any extra water drains out. The seed are supposed to be wet, but not sitting in water or they will just rot. I wasn't sure if anyone already gave this info as it was a long thread.

    algae growing in water system...help

Hi, You have to use a dark bucket, I used a blue bucket bought at Lowes, better yet get a black bucket somewhere. The light coming through the white bucket is what is causing the algae to grow. Also, Put in a pvc union right after the pipe comes out of the bucket. This way all you have to do is...

    Nipple Waterer Help

I used the type of nipple waterers that you attach around a 3/4" piece of pvc pipe and the chicks took to them in less than an hour, I used them for about 6 weeks. The only thing that I did not like was that just from the chickns drinking, a lot of water got onto the pine shavings and soaked a...

I'm trying to do the same thing. I am looking for a stainless steel container with a cover, maybe about 3 gallons or so, then I will use pvc piping and the red watering cups from there. I need to keep the water heated during the winter as I live in MA. I am going to try to wrap heat tape around...
