Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Nice birds and eggs everyone :) thanks for all the answers to my questions on breeding splash cuckoos to my black coppers. They'll probably end up finding a new home or the stew pot sadly. I have another quick question: Since it appears that FBCM are late bloomers, and they begin to lay later...

Nice birds! Those roos are striking! I'm not sure how I will see any barring on my splash cockerels, right now they don't have all their feathers just wings and tails there is a bit of blue splashes but they are still mainly white.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I am sure I read that cuckoo is sex linked?

Oh t oh! thanks so much! That was helpful! So my splash cockerels if I have any are single barred blue splash. I really hope I have a pullet in there! If they are single barred and I breed them to black copper females. Will I have a chance of getting any solid offspring?

Nice ! Nice! How many pullets laid those? So are they just starting at 6 months? The Marans must take longer than other egg layers due to their size and slower growth rate?

Tha Thanks so much everyone! I can definitely grasp genetics a bit better these days than back 3 years ago. I have that come genetics ebook hidden somewhere I just must dust it off and give it a read again! One question: what did you mean if the Roo is correctly barred? If he has 2 copies...

Using sand in run AND in coop?

I'm new here but unjust want to say what a great idea! Thanks for posting! I would probably need a long sand for my coops but this seems so much easier and cleaner than other types of bedding.

Haha! I'm sure! Well I do find these forums to be so helpful even when I was just learning to care for poultry, I learned so much more online than from books!

I meant mixing not meucin in my last post! Also the beautiful big Roo I was referring to was the fully bred Netherlands line that is being used for the 2013 breeding program and the hens were the American lines. So my chicks are half Netherlands lines and half mixtures of the American lines if...

Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hello everyone! I'm new here and I am embarking on a few projects with the FBCM. I am basically a back yard chicken fancier and have never shown birds etc. My goals are to improve on and maintain the flock's breed quality and to breed a few blues on the side for fun (2 separate flocks). I first...

    Hello from Canada!

Thanks Spikes Chooks! I sure am looking forward to learning from the wealth of knowledge here. I used to be a member of thecoop.org but not even sure if its still going. Every time I did a google search on something chicken related this site came up so I decided to take the plunge and join!

    Hello from Canada!

Thanks Redsox! Well given the known variability of hatch success rates for shipped eggs, I should have known not to attempt it in my old bator which I practically had to babysit to ensure proper heat and humidity levels! Out of 2 dozen eggs, I hatched 2 wheaten Marans (one died next day after...
