Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Oh t
Someone may have answered already if so sorry.

Yes barred or cuckoo roos would need 2 copyies of that sex linked trait to breed TRUE. The only way to get roos with 2 copies is to have a barred roo and barred hen. Roos with one copy look more hen like in color. Roos with double barring genes will be whiter looking and the ones with one copy will be darker looking.

For nomal breeding you NEED a double barred roo. Single barred roos can be used but you need to understand how the genes work and what you could get.

oh! thanks so much! That was helpful! So my splash cockerels if I have any are single barred blue splash. I really hope I have a pullet in there! If they are single barred and I breed them to black copper females. Will I have a chance of getting any solid offspring?

Aloha kakou,

So the barred feature that Pinkchick is talking about appears to be a sex linked gene, like colorblindness for humans.  The male has an X chromosome and a Y chromosome, but if this gene appears on his only X chromosome, the allele will be expressed, even if the barred gene is recessive.  For the females, She must inherit this recessive gene on both of her X chromosomes, in order for the barring to be expressed.  Do females ever express the barred feature?

that all sounds good and dandy untiI remember that Pinkchick said that males pass it on to all their offspring(every time?), which means that it isn't a sex linked gene?

I also wonder why females can only pass it on to their son

What do you think Pinkchick?

Aloha, puhi

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I am sure I read that cuckoo is sex linked?

I don't have any of a single barred roo This is a Good Shepard Barred Rock double barring genes This is a cuckoo Marans Roo Roo and pullet side by side Pullet Old pic of my Old Barred Rock Roo and some Blue Barred Rocks hens/pullets
Nice birds! Those roos are striking! I'm not sure how I will see any barring on my splash cockerels, right now they don't have all their feathers just wings and tails there is a bit of blue splashes but they are still mainly white.

You dont want to breed cuckoo and coppers together. The short answer is NO. They will still be coppers.....that is not a sex linked trait. You would never get solid blue or black....even if they looked solid they would carry genes for copper and maybe silver too depending on the combo.....not a good mix.

Well, after waiting and waiting..... today I got my FIRST Marans egg!!

Layed by my 6 month old Blue Marans, Charlotte. It is beautiful and was well worth the wait! It is everything I wanted in a Marans egg! Now I just need to convince my 7 month old Wheaten Marans Millie to lay......

I've got a small variety of Marans... does this qualify me to post in this thread?

I have what I think should be a Wheaten Marans roo. He hatched out of an egg labeled WM anyway.

He is only 7 weeks old and already crowing like crazy. Its not a full on big daddy crow... its about half of that, but with all the volume of the big boys.

Anyone had one start crowing that early?

Here he is:

(Unfortunately I'm going to have to get rid of him. I'm not allowed to have roosters in the city I live.)

I dont have wheaten marans......but i am pretty sure he is NOT wheaten. I could not tell you what he is. Not copper or cuckoo either.

Mornin Don. How's everything going up your way? Still hatching or just growing out chicks now? I'll be setting my third hatch here in about a week I believe since the temps are mild enough, just collecting a few more eggs to go in. I've got broodies everywhere, so it will be a small setting this time.

Did you happen to see the photos I posted the other day? The shots weren't that great, but thought they showed the body type on the birchens well enough. I'm curious to see what you think of the progress on the birchens.
