Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Here's some bird photos, Pink.
HUBBA HUBBA! That rooster is a hunk of burning love isn't he? What a nice looking bird! You remember that cockerel that I posted of my bestfriends a while back that resembled him, well now that you posted pics of your girlies, I can see that she has a hen or 2 that resemble your girls, instead of resembling her other Wheatens hens. BTB are made from the Wheatens correct?

Just got my first pair of Marans two weeks ago.  They are about four weeks old now and are Golden Duckwing in color.  I can't wait until they get old enough to breed.  I understand that the Golden Duckwing doesn't breed true, is that correct?

I'm drawing a total duh moment, please forgive me, Golden Duckwing = Wheatens right?

Thanks Kim. I'm liking how they are coming along, just can't wait to see what else hatches and develops out of the chicks from this year. It's a process that I'm always impatient with, but is great for learning from. Will try for more photos of some of the others

I have to share! A few of my December hatch black tail buff pullets are starting to lay! Here's a full sun photo of their first eggs.

I'll be breeding the best offspring back to their parent to align the dark egg genes and build upon the other traits I'm trying to solidify. Fun project.

do you mean breeding both genders back to the opposite parent or just one way around?

I'll be putting some pullets back onto their sire and will take my best cockeral over select G-1 (group 1) hens for next year. I will do the same thing with my G-2 birds to stabilize the traits I'm currently working on. I have a 5 year plan with this color variety.

Ok I am not pinkchick but i do know the roos carry 2 of the same genes. That to allows roos to have double barring. The hens determine gender they carry one of each. If humans are xx female and xy male it is the OPPOSITE in chickens. Roos are xx and hens are xy. I know those are not the right letters but i cant think what they are and i cant look them up.

The barring gene is on the x genes for example. If the hen is barred she can only pass the barring to the male chicks. If the roo is correctly barred he would pass it off to 100% of the chicks.

Vicki NICE!

I have a black copper growing out that i am really liking. He has about the same coloring in his hackles. Nice even color too. He has not stared to ge much color all over but it looks like the same color as his hackles.

Thanks so much everyone! I can definitely grasp genetics a bit better these days than back 3 years ago. I have that come genetics ebook hidden somewhere I just must dust it off and give it a read again!

One question: what did you mean if the Roo is correctly barred? If he has 2 copies of the genes? Say I have my Splash cockerels here and no splash pullets which were the product of silver cuckoo Roo x blue copper hen, would the cockerels have still 2 copies? I know the pullets would have only the one. I appreciate all your responses you are wonderful! And those of you with websites your birds are lovely. Pink's blue coppers are pretty!

! Nice! How many pullets laid those? So are they just starting at 6 months? The Marans must take longer than other egg layers due to their size and slower growth rate?

These are from two pullets that hatched December 22nd and they started laying a few weeks ago. I numbered/collected their first eggs for documentation. The first week I only got one egg out of each of them.
