Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hey Kim,

Had some unexpected stuff come up yesterday, so photos were cut short. I got a couple, but they were wild and not wanting to stay still. The first bird broke my art light, so this is just total crap lighting that is yellowy colored, but will give you an idea of the copper I'm getting on some of my girls and their body type. They're 8 weeks old now. I'll shoot for more photos hopefully tomorrow if I get out of work on time. The leg feathering will be a slower process for me this year as I lost two of my best feathered girls, but I'm getting there after the hit I took over the last two years in not hatching out as many black coppers.

The feathers are so shiny and silky. What do you feed them?

I have to share! A few of my December hatch black tail buff pullets are starting to lay! Here's a full sun photo of their first eggs.

I'll be breeding the best offspring back to their parent to align the dark egg genes and build upon the other traits I'm trying to solidify. Fun project.

Beautiful! I think I have a problem with the copper on one of the males I have growing out....................the wing bow color is nice and correct, but the hackles are now turning a very pretty very pale creamy very light yellow like you would see on a Black Birchen that is leaking gold/red. It's not brassy or straw.

They are lovely! Congratulations! Do you have some photos of the birds to share too? :)
