I have a lid-opener and I think it would be my preference. I have plenty of room to clean the area, I have easy access to the eggs, and I can check on birds without scaring them out.
I have a small coop with just two hens. I'm currently using the traditional, white and red waterer that is placed on the ground atop bricks. However, I am getting tired of the daily (sometimes multiple times a day) cleaning that this waterer requires. Not to mention that it takes up a good solid...

Is that a waterer in the first picture? I am trying to think of something that will take up less ground space and will need less cleaning. Where is the water source for that one? (if it is a waterer)
This is Fancy, my new girl. I am just so excited about her. The breeder said she was 8-9 months, but I am not sure. She has not yet started laying. I am hoping once she gets adjusted she will start.
Well, if that is the case, I have no idea then. The hatchery (Bob's Biddies in Ray City, GA) told me that it was called a Dena's Special which is a cross between a Domonique and RIR. It doesnt matter to me.
I DO know that my new girl is pretty awesome though! LOL
Thank you both! I am just so excited with her. My other hen is a hatchery special, aka mutt, so I am very happy to have something of quality now. She's just so sweet and pretty. I cant wait to start handling her more.
I am just so excited. I purchased this girl yesterday. The lady said she was about 8-9 months old. She actually wasn't for sale, but I couldn't leave without her. She's so calm and laid back. I'm kind of surprised she has not started laying yet, but hopefully she will soon. Just wanted to share.
I am new to this breed and have been researching like crazy since I purchased her. What can you tell me? She is supposed to be about 8-9 months old and the lady said she should start laying eggs anytime. I just love her look and demeanor. She's so laid back and calm.
Thank you for your reply. I'm not so sure she is a gradual moulter, as you suggest. I suppose so, but I would assume they'd continue laying at some interval if they were gradual moulters. She stops laying completely with each moult for weeks at a time.
Could there be something else making her...
