    Rooster with a limp/droopy behind.

Sorry for the long absence. He could have, I'm sure, but I didn't see it happen if he did. Despite plenty of roosting room at three different levels my chicks like to push each other off the roost right before bedtime. It's possible he landed badly. We felt up and down his leg and nothing...

    Rooster with a limp/droopy behind.

My two year old rooster started limping a couple days ago. He is still eating, drinking, and crowing. He doesn't seem listless or sick, he's just having a really hard time walking. I've checked his feet and he doesn't show any signs of bumblefoot or any injuries. His scales are fine, his toes...

Second hand Rooster -unsure of breed

We examined him before we took him and quarantined him when he got here. He was free ranged where he was living and he had been raised from a chick with the other two cockerels so they lived together peaceably enough. We took this picture the day we released him from quarantined so he's a bit...

Second hand Rooster -unsure of breed

Good guess! She was actually an aussie/border collie hybrid! Her abilities as a guardian are tbd. As for Jacques Chanticleer, I should have known he would be. All my hens are mutts, too. That's ok! I love them anyway.

    Hawks

The hawks in my area are total opportunists. Because of this year's drought I think there is less easy prey for them so my chickens are the next best thing. I would be worried about more attacks if I were you. I wouldn't let them out to free range unless you or someone is available to keep a...

Second hand Rooster -unsure of breed

I got this handsome guy from an animal shelter worker. I went in to get a dog and got to talking about chickens. I was saying that I wish I had a rooster and she told me she had three and she'd give me one. Someone in town had raised three roosters for pets, but the neighbors complained and he...

Nap time at the fluffy butt hut.

I just wanted to tell you that I enjoyed these immensely! People might think we're crazy for loving chickens so much...maybe we are...but they are the ones eating eggs from a store. Ewww! Anyway, your family is lovely. Thanks for posting these and raising my spirits.

POORLY 4 DAY OLD SILKIE CHICK , POO COVERED BUM WHICH I HAVE TO CLEAN PLEASE HELP ?

I'd like to add a very humble addition to this. If you are using a galvanized metal waterer then switch to glass or plastic before adding the acv. It reacts with the metal and will poison the water. I think it's safe to add to stainless steel as well, but I'm not sure what all metals it reacts...

    Starting out in Colorado

from Ohio! Congrats on soon becoming a chicken mom. Two or three chickens will be super easy to handle, you'll have to post pics when you get them. I can't give you much advice on coops . My coop, while very functional and perfect for chickens, is kinda ugly and built into our barn. My chickens...

Lethargic, weak acting hen. I'm afraid she is going to die.

Thanks for the kind words. It was very sad, but I could just sort of tell there was nothing I could do for her. Thankfully she was isolated and no other chickens are presenting symptoms. I've been calling everyone from vets to the Ohio Ag Dept. to arrange for a necropsy and fecal testing for...

Lethargic, weak acting hen. I'm afraid she is going to die.

Thanks so much to everyone who replied. Unfortunately she died while I was at church this morning. I'm going to do everything I can to find out what killed her and maybe I'll be able to help others with these symptoms because this pops up quite often. Thanks for all the helpful replies.

    A Chicken Breakthrough Story

Getting my flock was pretty awesome. Picking up a warm egg from a nest for the first time was magical. Hearing my Rooster crow for the first time was beautiful. But today I hand fed a sick hen. She sat pitifully in my lap while I coaxed a mash into her beak. That's when I realized I am crazy...

    Sleeping chickens

Do you keep a light in their coop? If not, do you turn on a light when you check on them? Light triggers physiological responses in chickens. It lets them know when to sleep and even when to lay eggs. I keep my coop on a timer that turns the light on in the morning and off at night, so they have...

    New kid on the block!

Hi Sarah! Welcome from Ohio I'm so jealous of your goat. I'm planning to start raising them for milk next spring. You'll have to let me know what you learn along the way. 19 & 20? You guys are young! What an awesome way to start your lives out. Good luck with your little farm. I don't think...

Lethargic, weak acting hen. I'm afraid she is going to die.

**Update** I force fed her some crumble mixed with electrolyte water into a runny paste. At first she didn't like me doing that, but after she swallowed it she sort of came to life and start to peck it out of my fingers. I let her eat as much as she wanted, which was only a couple teaspoons. I...
