I have been using a heat lamp for those extremely frigid nights on a timer - not all nite long but spaced out during the nite time. It is the clamp style and I discovered early on that the clamp is not a reliable way to hold the fixture in place. There is a metal piece that is holding at two...
Hi - Computer_Chicken here! Newbee to the chicken raising realm. But going full tilt with building a great Coup/shed for those winged wonders.
These 3 Buff Orpingtons/1 Buff Rock are 1 week old at this point, yes I used a trouble light with a 60W bulb for heat in a cardboard box. Needed to...
I am new to raising chickens, here is my coup.
The Coup design is similar to one I saw on the Medium sized coup pages. I'm using materials that I had left over from my garage. Therefore the cost is kept at a minimum using a lot of materials I had on hand. Pressure treated 2x6's with plywood...
One of my hens is also missing feathers on her back. At first I though it was the molting process, then I blamed the Rooster. But I'm not so sure the rooster is the culprit. I have been keeping him separated during the day and only allowing him to roost at night with the other 5 hens. I think...
This is what the comb looks like. It's hard to get a chicken to stay still.
I used neosporin on the wound, its looks black possibly due to the chicken putting it head in dirt. Hope the comb will be OK as is.
Not sure how it happened just noticed my Buff Orp 2yrs old had a bloody face, then I noticed that the back of her comb was partially pulled away from her scalp, must have caught it in the fencing and somehow yanked it, slicing it right across the bottom. I isolated her today and she seems ok...
A couple of my hens are now starting to loose feathers for the first time, they are about 16 months old. Also egg production is down. I think that is normal from what I read.
Is there something that I can do to prevent the back of the Hens neck from being excessively pecked at? I see bare skin on two of my 4 Buff Orphs. The Rooster is doing it I'm sure.
My Roo has gotten to the stage of wanting to breed with my Buff Orphs. But I have noticed that the back of the necks are being pecked to the point the skin is showing on one hen in particular. Is there anything I can do to protect the hens from becoming injured?
I give my 4 Buff Orps a handful of cut grass now & then as a treat. ALso I pull grass/ chick weed/ etc by hand and feed them occasionally.
They have not had any problems.
They will be with the mom hen about 6 weeks in my experience. Then the chicks will be able to maneuver themselves all around the coup so my dividing fence wall could not stop them from mingling with the adults. It helps to have a high roost for them cause the adults tended to annoy them...
