silkies versus dutch bantams - egg laying

I am curious...How do they compare as egg layers. Size, frequency, broodiness..?. Part of the reason I am wondering is that I have a couple of silkies that are great layers..with occasional bouts of broodiness...(after all who doesn't get broody sometimes... but I need to replace two...

    Why did Henny die?

I know that I don't have much info. She seemed fine to me last night. When we woke up this morning she was dead on the floor of the hen house. What should I look for to determine cause of death and what should I do to protect other girls. She had no visible injuries. Didn't act sick. When...

How do chickens decide what is food?

I know this sounds silly. But I have watched my chickens and I just don't get it. I come out and they come running up to me. So they must think I have food. I throw something down and they either eat it or act like it is invisible. The stuff they ignore they don't examine, peck at, smell...

    RIP Phyllis 08/29/2012-05/21/2012

egg the size of yogart covered raisen

I have been getting normal sized eggs for about six weeks from most of not all of my seven hens...not really sure who is laying what. But they have all been the expected size or greater. I just found two eggs next to each other. One is about the size of a walnut and is perfect except it has...

    Broody silky Mama wanna be

I have heard that you shouldn't let silkies hatch ducks. If I recall the feathers on the feet can strangle the ducklings. Does anyone know if this is just upon hatch? Could I try putting some day olds under her in a few weeks?

    Broody silky Mama wanna be

Being a first time chicken mama I heard that that you should put golf balls or fake eggs out to let the chickens know where they should lay the eggs. I should have known that they would know where to lay.... 1. In the middle of the yard. 2. In the pot of my Meyer lemon tree. 3. In the pig...
