We have 4 birds, and have had up to 7, three were roosters. We gave away the roosters because of ordinance rules.
Anyway, we live outside of Tucson, AZ, and have hot summers and can have cold winter nights, although those don't last long.
We currently have 2 EE, one white Leghorn, and one...
I bought a book, daily eggs. The author recommended the added oregano, oatmeal and flax seed to the feed to enhance laying. The oregano is thought to help prevent ecoli and other infections.
About a month ago one of our hens started to crow. At first we weren't sure if it was one of ours or our neighbors ( their birds are young). All of our girls are laying, and the one who is crowing (was able to catch her in the act today) is young, around 8 months. She's definitely the boss...
Thank you. I feed them layer feed. 40lbs mixed with 2 c. Oatmeal, 2 cups flax seed and 2 cups of dried herbs.
Supplement with oyster shell after the first soft eggshell, and a few meal worm.
They get some fresh greens, kale, Swiss chard and fruit. Not too much.
All of the chickens look and...
Bea is jealous. She loves attention, but only if she is the one getting attention. When I hold one of the other girls to check them over, or talk to one of the other girls, Bea will trot over in a huff, and actually yank a beak full of feathers from the other hen. I've learned to close her in...
This morning I found an egg near the roost that had a this transparent shell. I believe it's from my Barred Rock, Checkers.
She started laying about a two months ago, and I've found three of these. Otherwise she lays normal eggs almost everyday.
My other girls, 2 EE, 1 white Leghorn, and one...
We live in an area where roosters are banned. We bought 6 chickens from someone, and three turned out to be roosters. We had to find homes for them. Not easy. The ban is there. Respect it and your neighbors.
We have two EE. Bea and Bea Arthur. Lol.
Bea is my girl. She's friendly, and loves attention. Bea Arthur is older and skittish. I think she's about 2. She joined our ladies a about 4 months ago, and is the boss.
I only have a picture of Bea. She likes to jump in front of the camera.
