Just wanted to say thanks for the help to everyone, they have been outside for a while and they are happy and healthy. Crazy to think how much of a difference a month has made - today it got to 35c (95f) and I was putting ice in their water!
I don't have an answer but your post reminds me that I never reported my failings. Dodgy eBay heat mats work well until they break, and then you'll find yourself scrambling to make an alternative. Avoid that option.
Hopefully this is better for combs. Rumps are even trickier. Some are curious and some are flighty, but none of them want to stand there in a line with their butts pointed at me :barnie
I actually don't know how cold it's getting in the kitchen at night. Probably close to the outside minimum, because I'm letting as much air in as I can.
They are under a heat pad, but I'm phasing it out and it is now down pretty low.
Temperatures have been 10c-24c, but next week is a bit...
Forecast is for minimums of 6C, or 43f next week. That's a coldish week for this time of year, it should warm up a lot more over the next two weeks or so.
They won't be able to have the heat unfortunately, I can't get power out there.
I'm a dummy and accidentally started this thread twice, unless/until an admin deletes one I would love it if you could ignore this one and reply here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/age-guesses-and-sexing.1424663/
Hi guys, I got these chicks 2 weeks ago today, and the guy said they were "1-2 weeks old" and wouldn't really eleaborate. Any ideas on age? The only place I can keep their brooder is in my kitchen, and as much as I love them, it isn't ideal, so I want to know when they can go out.

Thanks again for the welcomes everybody. Chick photo as promised of my 4 Plymouth Rocks and 2 Light Sussex, all very happy thanks to the info on these forums
It is adjustable, and is currently turned down a bit. I was measuring with a infrared thermometer. I did wonder if it was emitting a lot of IR and reading wrong. Either way, they're nice and happy
I have great success to report! 6 very happy chicks under their reptile heater. I used a cake rack with bolts for legs, encased the whole thing in a pillowcase to hold it together with holes for the bolts to go through. At the last minute I added some tea towels because I noticed that the...
Only 6 😊
I think I will decide on mounting once I have it in my hands, and I'll make sure to update with photos if/when I have some comfy chicks nestled under it
What a monster thread! I've been searching through for info on other sorts of heat mats, as it is really hard to find affordable therapeutic heat pads with a diasableable auto off here (Australia). I wonder if it's a safety standard thing.
Anyway, found this very cheap reptile mat, with temp...
Wow, what an awesome forum. I'm new to chickens, hoping to get my first chicks in about 2 weeks (as long as I can get the landlord sorted before then, and the brooder ready). I've been creeping BYC for a while, and I can't tell you how many silly mistakes it has already saved me from.
I'm in...
