Topic of the Week - Feeding table scraps to your flock

Sometimes I run out of food, and then feed them rice and scrambled eggs. They get scrambled eggs about 3xs a week. They pick out egg shells from compost bin plus eat everything in there. They get whatever is leftover.

     Purina Layena Omega-3

I have had good luck with Purina Layena products. I just started the Omega-3 fortified food. My question is poultry biochemistry related: How efficiently do chickens convert ALA (alpha-linoleic acid) to EPA and DHA? This leads to more questions-- Should I feed them a fish oil supplement...

    Golden laced Wyandottes

I have 4 GLW hens and one rooster. He has not started mating yet and the hens haven't started laying at 22 weeks. Should I be concerned? The other half of my flock is buff orpingtons and started laying 3 weeks ago. Please help. Thanks

    Rain and Chickens

Yeah, I need to fix the roof though, but they love my porch and stairs. They can get under the stairs and usually sleep on top of stairs. Clean up is easy. They have a porch. Thanks!

Topic of the Week - Aggressive Roosters: What is the best way to handle them?

When my buffs started laying, my rooster would charge me and my dog from the back--that's when I got scared and started smacking a broom on the ground to scare all chickens away at least 3 feet. He's gotten a little more relaxed, but if he charges me I hit him with a flip flop, phone, whatever...

    Rain and Chickens

Is it okay for chickens to stay wet? The air temp is still 74, but I was wondering if I should put them in the garage due to the storms. Austin, TX area

How to get hens to lay in nesting box.

Hey board! Some of my buff orpingtons just started laying, and I tried to introduce them to their nesting boxes, but they dig out the plastic easter eggs, and also real eggs. They fish them out of the nest. It has only been one day, but the last time I did this, my hens were more compliant...

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

First egg(s). I found the nest. These are from Buff Orpingtons, I believe. Combs are not completely red, so not eggspecting yet.

    PUNISHMENT idea for egg eaters

I've read that golfballs should be used as a preventive... Spanking works with my rooster and hens. I'm the kind of mommy that doesn't do this very often, so it works with all my animals per my Mothers disciplinarian techniques. Shes also a teacher! ;) Hope that helps and good luck.

    Hen just started laying

This is so exciting, I suspected the same thing. I have a degree in life science.. can't take the scientist out of me!

    Hen just started laying

It has been nearly exactly 5 months to the day, and I discovered a hidden nest! One of my buffs started laying 7 days ago. Do you think I have more than one hen laying due to the color variance?

    Golden laced Wyandottes

Hi. I have some 3 mo. old Golden laced Wyandottes, that I purchased from efowl. This is my first experience with this breed. One of my hens has those irridescent green feathers in her tail. Is this normal?
