I lost my barred rock today due to sour crop, I think. The crop felt like a water balloon. This was her third day like this and after reading several posts on the topic I tried massaging her crop while holding her head down. She started vomiting right away, mostly cloudy water like. We did this...

One of my girls layed a wrinkled egg today. The shell is nice and hard, so I don't think it's a calcium problem. They were locked up inside the laying area of their coop last night because it went down to 27 degrees. They hate being "cooped up" like that, maybe it's stress related. Should I be...

Thanks for the bird seed idea. My girls don't go out free range yet, so I was looking for something I could grow and snip off for them. Thanks again
My babies are 6 weeks old now and outside in the coop. We have fresh sweet corn in the garden that is ready to pick. Is it safe to give the girls fresh sweet corn and other scraps or should we stick to the grower feed for now? They do have grit available and they are getting plenty of bugs now...

No more insects until they're older!
Thanks

Neither of us have ever raised chicken before.

My chicks are 2 weeks old now. Tonight I was outside and spotted a small caterpillar on my apple tree. It was only about a quarter of an inch long, and I couldn't resist.
I dropped it into the brooder with my babies. One of my Barred Rocks swallowed it down. Now about an hour later when she lays...
