Just another update - after just a few weeks of adding the extra light to their coop - I am now getting 10-14 eggs per day from my 18 girls! I'm just ecstatic! Thanks to BYC for learning me stuff…. the info on here is invaluable.
Asides from the obvious Cornish X debate - what breed would be best for me to raise specifically to eat and at what age? We like white meat, so large breasted birds.....GO
I have 2 EE that are 30 weeks and 1 that is 1 yr+.... I just started getting 1 blue egg every other day last week - I'm not sure if it's my older girl who if finished with her moulting or if it's the young ones but I'm fairly certain that it's only 1 of them. If it's Beyonce' (my older one)...
I got 6/18 - I still have 8 birds who have never laid yet as they were just born in May but we are getting there! The light with a timer in the coop has helped production tremendously!
Maybe you could ask your neighbor what happened to him out of concern. Do they have dogs or some animal that would hurt him? If they don't have a good answer then maybe call SPCA or something?
Well my girls are doing much better now with the lights being on! Everyone's combs are bright red now, even my girls that went through a moult, they are noticebly more red. I'm up to 5-6 eggs per day now and have 4 of the babies lay their first eggs this week! And they are singing up a storm...
Up until the past month when my rooster got older and started climbing on the girls, I have not had to deal with fertilized eggs at all. He was an accident :) I was hoping he was a hen.... anyways, I collect the eggs every day so they don't have time to sit and develop. But will all the eggs...
Their combs are very red now just in the last week or so - I think I got two new buff orp eggs today, were a tad blood smeared and long ovals. So I think the light is showing some improvement. I'll keep them confined as soon as I finish the little corral this weekend.
