Hybrid ducklings, hatched 6/2 and 6/3 are available NOW. Four ducklings of the original brood (8) remain. UPDATE: 4 left, must go together! New pictures, ready NOW! First come first served, experienced duck parents preferred. The last two pictures were taken this weekend. Get them while they're...
The long awaited update to the Co-Nesting post:
First and most exciting: ALL EIGHT ducklings survived and are thriving! My father in law took care of the two smallest and weakest (indoors and under a warmer) from the time they were 24 hours old (June 5) to June 7. On June 7, I recommended he...

So am I! Deathly afraid, I run to the window any time I hear a duck quack. So far, no violence and no warning signs of abandonment. We had to leave town for over a week, and we’re headed back tomorrow. I’ll post more when I see the situation with my own eyes. Reports from home indicate all is well.
I’ll follow this post to see what happens! My co-nesting females were peaceful and harmonious until they took the hatchlings out of the coop for the first time.
Then everything changed. The older female immediately became very possessive and began physically driving the younger one away! For...
I thought this situation was strange, but I didn’t post about it because I thought nothing would come of it. Our Ancona female, Pepper, has attempted to hatch eggs two years in a row with a large clutch no live ducklings.
Sooooooo, this year we have two new (year old) Silver Appleyard females...
Oh good! We just assembled a small coop for the babies, and the adults can see them clearly (separated by a layer of hardware cloth). The adults seem only minimally curious about them and the new coop.
We got four new ducks (hens) from Metzger, hatched June 1. Two are Silver Appleyard and two are Welsh Harlequin. Question: when can we safely introduce them to our adult Anconas (1 duck, 1drake)?
So sorry about your duck. That’s scary stuff! I agree about having a vet assess the damage. I was nursing a duck back to health indoors after a bobcat attack, but missed a puncture wound under her wing. By the time I took her to the vet, it was too late. 🥺 Best of luck to you both
Here is an update: he turned out nothing like I could ever have expected! Green head, pronounced blue wing bars, white with pencilled black and brown in the chest and back. Black tail.
Mallard male parent or two black and white Ancona? As you can see, he looks nothing like the others.
Here is my mystery duck’s photo from today. I’m almost sure it’s a drake; they’re over seven weeks now and no quacks. Is this a wild mallard/Ancona hybrid or a strangely marked Ancona?
