Hi all! My name is Elizabeth. I am relatively new to keeping chickens. I have three batches of chicks I've hatched (may 13, 2010, June 6 & July 8th) in an incubator, Mille Fleur d'uccle bantams, cuckoo maran, b/b/s orps, b/b/s cochins, sl/blr wyandottes and some "mystery" chicks which have...

    please give ideas :-(

What part of PA are you in? I'm south- western. If you are near, I have a bag and a half of cracked corn you could have. I know it's not a good main diet, but would help out with supplementing the other things you are giving them. Do you have any wild bird seed? My chicks love that for a...

    raising wild chicks

I have seen others post here from Hawaii that are doing the exact thing. You may want to do a search for "Hawaii" and see what comes up. Best of luck to you! I think it would be such fun! Oh, and from Pennsylvania!

Very, very Henry! Look at those saddle feathers! Beautiful! Odd, he hasn't crowed yet. Heard anything that sounds like a broken kazoo? LOL

    Update on hatch

It is all in what works for you. I lay mine on their sides, but some people like the egg carton method. You would need to cut the sides down a bit. I like the on the side method because I really think the first chicks encourage the slower ones to hatch by knocking the others around---giving them...

    Chicken Grit???

You can get grit at the feed store. The grit comes in different sizes, and I'd go for the smallest right now. Make sure it is a granite grit and with NO CALCIUM added. Calcium is harmful to chicks. Only give it when they're old enough to be laying eggs. Also, some folks think oyster shell is...

How many toes does he have? 4 or 5? I'm thinking Polish, though if he has 5 toes, Houdan.

what breed is my black and white rooster?

The picture is small, and hard to see, but I think he may be a polish.....or a mottled houdan? Oh, by the way.... Glad to have you here! Chickens are so much fun and this place is a hoot. We're all enablers though so look out!

Video: Egg recall puts free-range farmers in demand

Quote: Spoiled? Naw! I don't believe that! LOL Yes, I am guilty as well. Farmer Jones' chickens look like they've got a pretty good life. I like his set-up. I LOVE his "salvaged" nests. Oh, I would love to find old nests like that!

Feed store hunting for chicks, a good idea?

You could order the 25 from a hatchery and sell the rest in Craigslist--or go in half with someone. Also, in "chicken math" there is no difference between 12 and 25--it's all the same! I started out wanting 8. Now I have 30 chickens and 50 eggs in the incubator!
