My eight-year old EE, Bertha, took a year off from laying, but she’s back in the box! She’s laid about ten eggs over the last three weeks. And she’s going to lay one today!
She and Dottie, my SS, are both still laying. They never cease to amaze me.
What can I add to the water and Aquasol to make it palatable for the girls? Or maybe a better descriptor would be to “disguise” it from the girls? You’d think that chickens who drink from mud puddles wouldn’t be so finicky, but they are not happy with the taste or smell.
I’m using aquasol from now on! Rural King’s pharmacy has it in smaller, less expensive bottles. That way I can put it in the water and be done with it. Most of my girls don’t like to be handled, so this should be less stressful for everyone.
I actually found a shovel that’s designed for the beach! It’s great for those “heavy loads!” 😆

I definitely have my “clucker clothes” that I don’t wear in the house. I’ve been pooped on (a lot since my girls use me as their own personal jungle gym), but they’re never gonna sand is also dusty. So I just strip off the clucker clothes and put on the house clothes when I come in.
Great...

One thing I’d recommend is that you really secure your coop and run. Hardware cloth instead of the chain link dog...
I’m in waaaaaaay-Southern Ohio, right above the River. We have sand in the coop, run, and around the chicken yard. I love it. The run has a metal roof so the sand stays dry and cool all Summer. I use clear plastic to wrap the run in the Winter, so it stays dry and cuts the wind. I use a...
You could try enticing her with scrambled eggs or just some wet mash made with warm water and her usual chicken chow. My girls think that’s a huge treat! Good luck.
Except if you have a lot of clay in the, for lack of a better term, soil. We use natural, washed, coarse grain river sand from the Scioto River. We don’t even have enough “soil” to have a leach bed - we have to have our own personal water treatment plant for the house. So sand is perfect for...
Love it!!! I hope she’s as good a momma hen as my girls have all been. The best part is, since she’s already used to you handling her and having your hands in the brooder, you can play with the Chicklets without her getting upset!
