Even my relatively mature hens will lay a rubber egg from time to time, especially during times of stress. We had a heat wave come through (went from low 90s to almost 110) and because of a malfunction in my misters, I lost a number of hens, but some of the hens I didn't lose have laid some...
Do you ever make it south towards Fresno? I am south of Fresno, but get as far north as Merced or Turlock for work with some regularity. I just processed the rest of my meat birds, so I have an adjacent pen to my laying hens that would allow her to be segregated from the hens, but still be...
I have tried to fix prolapsed vents and one of two things seems to happen for me, whether I help or not:
1) It fixes itself
2) It gets worse and you have to cull
I have actually had pretty good success, but you need to isolate her from the rest of the covey. The others will pick at her and...
I've had a few of those myself. It's usually with younger hens that are still trying to work the kinks out. 10 bucks says that it is a double yolk. I only had 1 hen that was seriously injured by 1 of these. It's almost a survival of the fittest rite of passage in my flock.
Eggs to hatch or eat? I guess the answer is yes to both...haha. I did some culling over the weekend, but am still cranking out 30-40 eggs/day. I have most of the hens with roos, so I have hatching eggs available. Still verifying fertility on some, but I sold some to a neighbor who had a nice...
When I was in High School, I named all my show animals (hogs and dairy heifers) after ex-girlfriends. It was a little awkward when Belle (the ex-gf) read the stall card of my 1400 lb Holstein heifer at the county fair....
I have 3 Standard Rex does and a buck, and also a White New Zealand buck. The Rex/NO cross throws large framed, fast growing bunnies for meat. I processed my first from that cross over the weekend and it looks great!
Also, I found a home for my Light Sussex roo. He got an 11th hour reprieve...
Just that some people have a hard time with things like that. I've never trimmed a beak myself, but have heard it can help. My numbers are high enough that I can just cull troublemakers. I would search beak trimming and see if that is something you'd bed comfortable with.
Assuming you don't have enough quail to justify just culling? I have a pen of hens I have kept around since they are great layers, but they won't tolerate a rooster, as in nearly killed two of them. You can trim the beak if you can stomach it. If either is injured, you need to separate the...
