Luckily I was able to get 4 lavenders instead of just 2, but very sad to say one passed away yesterday. No idea why. It was only about 6 days old. No obvious cause. The others seem great. There are 2 calico cochins in with them. Can't wait to see them feather out.
I know this is an extremely late reply, but I just reserved two lavender Ameraucana bantam chicks. Hatched this past Monday and I will pick them up this coming Monday. I am so excited!! They are such pretty little birds. Was hoping for maybe a thread about them or something, but no such...
I am having a similar issue with a chocolate Orpington bantam chick. Three weeks old and still all down except for a few small feathers on wing tips. Everyone else is feathering out like crazy. (Cochin and Orpington bantams) Chick seems nice and healthy though.
Ahh, I was wondering if maybe it was his RIR's. I recently got a few cockerels and will be looking for pullets/hens in the near future. I too am trying to bring some good blood down this way.
I have thoroughly enjoyed lurking here and have learned so much. I am very new to all of this, but it has been incredibly enjoyable so far. I currently have 3 RIR cockerels and 2 silkie chicks of unknown sex. Gotta get a big run built so I can get some LF hens soon.
Of course, have to build...
That is too cool!!! Well at least it looks like your new babies will be good layers!
Don't some of the meat birds have white hens with large-ish combs like that?? (This is all a very new learning experience for me. Just making a guess.)
