"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Good morning La-yers & Happy Easter week! Welcome to the newcomers! Dealt with the downside of living next door to an organic farm this weekend -- Fri night they put out liquid manure on the fields next to us & Sat sure enough, the winds were blowing the WRONG direction! It would about knock you on your knees! *Pungent* was the operative word of the day. Yesterday was not much better! So I spent most of the weekend moving winter things into storage & boxing up books to donate to the library & some stuff for Goodwill & getting ready for Zipper coming next week! Yes, he finally is making the trip from Canada next Tuesday! A pic of my smiling boy:

Who is it with cochins? I have two standard splash babies about a week and a half old. One of them has no feathers, all still down. It has about two feathers per wing, but they aren't long at all.

Is this something that happens? Or is it a defective chick?

I am having a similar problem with one of mine. They are over a month old and still not close to being feathered. Here's a pic.

Love all the brooders and chick pics! I can't get any work done because of the mosquitoes. Even just filling the water got me about a hundred bites on my arms. Guess I need a long-sleeved chicken shirt.

Pam, I looked at that system and showed it to the DH. He's going to call for more info, to see if it's a good option for us. Which model did you use?

Eggs are still going strong, despite my bator's best efforts to cook them. I had a temp spike of 104, no idea how long it was like that because I found it when I woke up yesterday morning. But at candling last night everyone still looked great, only a few questionable ones that were too dark to see, and one little quitter from right after the last candling. It was just a little peanut. :(

I'm going up to Colfax on Wednesday to visit my chicken friends up there. They just had a baby, so I'm bringing some food and clothes, and I'm going to pick up his extra roosters for the auction. He has 11. Good thing the auction is Friday night. If anyone up near Alexandria wants SS eggs, let me know. :D Or if y'all want, or know anyone who wants, mixed-breed roos. He's got some wyandotte mixes that are really striking.

We have the one that uses propane so you can put it anywhere. Pam

I am having a similar issue with a chocolate Orpington bantam chick. Three weeks old and still all down except for a few small feathers on wing tips. Everyone else is feathering out like crazy. (Cochin and Orpington bantams) Chick seems nice and healthy though.

Ron built us a new brooder with 3 compartments I love it. here are pics of new chicks. I will be selling some nine week old legbars soon.I will have baby chicks too. The older ones are from greenfire farms I grew them out some and will sell the ones that wont be in my breeding program so someone will be able to but Jill reese line. Just letting y'all know I always give my la-yers first chance before putting adds up. I am NPIP certified. And a pic of a cool moth at my house.

Looks great, hon, glad you are having such success with them. Are you still gonna be selling eggs?

I've got three more days and then it's home. Can't wait.

Yes still selling hatching eggs. Glad to here your going home. I'm happy things went so well. Pam

I've got my first broody! And it's her first time, too. I'm not totally sure what to do with her. My bator eggs are going into lockdown Thursday night. So I'm thinking if she sticks with it, I'll either give her the lockdown eggs Thursday night, or the newly hatched chicks over the weekend. What do y'all think?

She screams at me, and the other hens, but she hasn't bitten or pecked at me. This is my FBMC pullet, the same one who burrowed into the straw when she first started laying. Sometimes I could only see her comb and tail feathers. She's really goofy.

Edit: I have 45 eggs so far, and some of them are her own eggs. I could give her 4-5 of the mixed eggs and not worry (too much) about losing them.

At 1 1/2 weeks old I would not be worried at all. Especially since it is large fowl. That is what you mean by standard, right? Anyway if they are from show stock I would be even less worried. It seems that with my bantam cochin the ones from the better feathering and better body type take way, WAY longer than the hatchery stock. There is also the fact that you only have 2 to compare to each other. Some lines have males that tend to feather in slower than the females. Of course that does not always hold true and I'm sure there is the occasional odd ball that just feathers in slower. Like my little Tater Tot. That little Cochin is just the oddest thing, lol. It was one I helped hatch and is the sweetest. But it feathered in on the tops of the shoulders and chest. But left the back and tail bare for SO long!!! It finally is just now having its whole body covered and it is like 7 or 8 weeks old. Of course that one has to be because it was one I helped and it just had to "get right" ;) Anyway........all that to say don't fret

And Tater Tot is the fattest little healthy thing ever! Although we will never use it for breeding for sure.

Hello all!! Jeanerette/New Iberia area here

Lots of work to be done around here and Hubby is still been gone most of the time for military work. I think in just a couple days it will be settled down for awhile though. That being said I doubt him being here would prevent me from overdoing it, lol. Tonight I mowed the entire front yard! That might not sound like much to some people, but with my crabby hip I can't always do it because it isn't all flat. I'm glad I could get it done and my Mr. won't have that looking him in the face when he gets back. He is always beat from so much windshield time!

We are concentrating on growing out all of our young birds we want to keep. Selling off a few mixed chicks and a couple hens that don't fit into our breeding plans. And going to build a grow out pen for the babies that are off of heat and feathered up nicely. Most are for 4-H breeding plans if they continue to do well.

Plenty of Gardening, weeding, seeding, ornamental plant and food plant work for about a dozen people. Lots of herbs and perennials coming up with gusto! Asparagus even! I will add a few pictures. btw, I love using the grass clippings from the front yard for my garden aisles. I lay down my empty paper feed bags and spread the clippings over top. Works GREAT!!!

This is a few mealworms I grabbed out today to feed to all my chickens. They are doing great and growing fast. I've still been using organic carrots for food/moisture, oats and chicken for bedding and food.

The leaves are growing out on the peach trees. Just in time to shade the baby peaches.

I've let my Napa Cabbage go to seed so I can collect and save the seeds for planting. Looks like they ARE setting seeds! I've removed any other plants from this family so they don't cross pollinate. The bees are loving all the bright yellow flowers! I'm glad too because I can't find any seed around here for this kind except on rare occasion.

The Plantain herb leaves are huge!

We came home to find this pretty moth laying her minty green eggs right by the front door.

A beautiful little spot near where my husband likes to fish.
