I have a similar problem. I have 10 hens and only 5 go in to roost. Others stay underneath the coop in a corner. I locked all of them in the coop for several days. One by one they started going in at night but has stopped at 5.
Just got my first double yolk today. Very excited. It weighs in at 3.8 ounces. Not sure who laid it since I have a mixed breed of ten hens. I hope I get more.
I recently lost all 5 of my chickens in 1 night due to predator. So I purchased 10 hens from someone. I got them about 8 o'clock at night and put them directly in the coop. Some even on the roost. Since then the hens won't even go into the coop or lay any eggs. They eat and drink OK in the run...
I have the same concern except 2 of my 3 hen just lay in the nest box. They're not broody, just stubborn. have to move them every night. I cover sounds like the idea.
I understand. When i was getting a variety of egg colors, it was fun. I've since lost my color producers and have just the standard brown eggs from golden comets that as you say, lay like machines.
