Pretty much just high quality layer pellets (her group is just starting to lay). Occasional house leftovers but not enough to make a difference. They free range during the day. thanks
One of my young pullets has swollen and hot feet and hock joints on both legs and can’t walk. She has no signs of bumblefoot, no lesions. She is also pretty young to get bumblefoot, I’ve only ever seen it older hens. She eats and drinks and is alert. No URI symptoms. No one else has it...
Well thank you for reaching out. The seller of the eggs responded to me and did confirm it's calico. I did think I would get some answers here but oh well! Thanks again!
Hi all. Does anyone know what color this is? We thought it would be red pyle but then it got darker. When it hatched it was a pale white/gold with red highlights. Is this calico? Thank you.
Thank you! I picked up that one, a buff and a chocolate. They were filthy, skinny, and with injured feet, maybe from wire cages. They didn't know how to jump up on anything or how to go out. They're all cleaned up and loving life now!
Well, the brooder group is pretty big and moving to a new location in a few days. I don't know if I'd want these littles to move with them. I also do have another broody out there, who I keep throwing out of the nest box. She's been broody for about a week. Maybe I should put these guys...
My 6 year old granddaughter snuck a few extra eggs under a hen without telling me, and I didn't notice for a few days. When I asked her about it she was so excited about "her" eggs that I just let them stay. when the first group hatched I threw "her" eggs in the incubator for a couple of days...
I have a few chicks hatching right now, maybe 3-5 chicks depending on what actually hatches, and I have a hen with five 3-4 day old chicks. I'd like to add these to her chicks if possible. Has anyone had luck sneaking chicks under a hen when they're a few days apart in age? Thanks!
Ok thanks! I'll just have to wait and see what happens. I haven't hatched my own in years, been buying hatchery female chicks each year (with the occasional surprise male in there). So this is a new experience!
I just hatched a group of chicks from a cream legbar rooster and a variety of hens of different breeds. A number of chicks from various hens have the light spot on the head that indicates a male in purebred cream legbar. Did that trait pass to the crossbreeds? Are these definitely male? Thanks.
Good point, you're right. When I get "packing peanuts" I figure they're giving away chicks they know are male, but in cases like this, this chick probably looked female. I'm not going to use him for breeding, but I'm sure others do.
