When do hens typically stop laying each year?

Five hens are just over two years and 10 that were last spring's. In the other house are 5 hens just over a year. In the house with 15 they have all stopped laying in the last two weeks. My bantams in the little coop never hardly skip a day. I sort of thought they stopped laying in February, am...

    Bees or not to bees

I am seriously considering adding a bee hive to our property. I have no doubt I have a good place for it but I am wondering about the chickens. Will the bees bother the chickens? will the chickens eat all the bees? I just read an article about guinea hens that said they are known to stand right...

What does being "self sufficient" mean to you?

We too would like to be self-sufficient. But for now are settling for healthier. We spend a lot on feed from my chickens. We used to have goats when the kis were little- but having an animal on a milking scheduled REALLY ties you down. You have to be there every 12 hours without fail. I do enjoy...

hornet nests in the compost pile

The chickens don't go near it. I would say they are yellow jackets burns like fire when they get you.

hornet nests in the compost pile

what can we do to get rid of these mean things? I don't want to use a lot of chemicals in the compost, kind of defeats the purpose. My husband already did take a whack at them with hornet spray at night one time. I guess it must be a pretty big next of them.

What breed does this sound like to you.

We got a few bantams this spring at the Tractor Supply Store. One was the littlest and faster chick ever. my husband named her flash. now here we are 5 months later and she looks like a gray pigeon. she is kind of full breasted, more "womanly" breasted than any we ever had before. still smaller...

    Organic Weed killer

I was given this recipe for an Organic weed killer. My husband has a nursery so we need to keep weeds down, but my chickens run the area every day so I don't want a lot of poisons around. I tried this on the weeds along the walkway and honestly, they were all brown and crispy the next morning...

    All about Amberlinks!

Our Amberlink, "Amber" starting laying 17 days ago, Beautiful deep maroonish brown. She has not missed a day laying an egg so far. Very friendly to my husband, when he picks her up she lays her head on his chest and when she hears her name she comes right away!

    Chickens and Children

Kids and Chickens We have 7 grandchildren ages 2 ½ to 12, and a little more than 2 dozen chickens ages 5 months to 18 months. Together they are like a peanut butter sandwich with fresh strawberry jam. One would be ok without the other but together it is so much more fun! My original plan was to...
