I have 4 hens, about 7 weeks old, that are running out of room in the brooder...fast.
I have two pens, 1 that can hold 11-12 birds comfortably and a tractor that can hold 4-5 comfortably.
The big house currently has 3 hens, 1 rooster and 5 2 week old chicks. The tractor has 2 hens and 1...
The one on the right had me unsure. It's a mix between a RIR rooster & Cinnamon Queen. The comb grew in fast, but now it's head has grown to make it smaller. It's 4 wks. Old in this pic.
Well, he's one tough silkie mix, my closest neighbor with chickens is about 1000 yards away, and when I asked him if he was missing a bird, he said he wasn't. We also have a resident pack of coyotes consisting of 10-12 dogs that roam the area. Not including the group of redtails that live in...
I have 2 broody girls right now. I just moved them out of the hen house to a brooding box where I built a box with 2 nests. Now instead of each sitting on a clutch, they 00 ever to sit together and take shifts on each set of eggs. 2 hens on one set, 1 hen roosts while the other sets, and various...
Im so jealous of all these awesome birds. wish I had the room for some good gamefowl. A guy down the road is selling some beautiful Shamo birds. I for one admire the gameness of any animal. Ive owned and bred game dogs for yrs and WILL eventually add some good birds to the yard. For now im...
I sure do like my EE's. My roo is awesome. He is 22 weeks old today and follows me everywhere and has no problem with my 5 yr old daughter carrying him around. although my 1 pullet is a firecracker. she's the smallest of the older birds but right at the top of the pecking order. she is so black...
I think my Dom is gonna start laying any day now!!! She's 21 weeks now and her comb is starting to darkin up. Caught her rooting around one of the egg boxes today. ...Gettin anxious.
Birds are starting to head south these days, even raptors. If you don't have any homesteading hawks already, you're gonna see the migratory suckers over the next couple of months. If you get netting make sure it has small holes, like 2x2 or 3x3. Juveniles can get through any bigger than that.
I really like the looks of the Barred EE's. Here's my boy Slugger on the right with his BSL buddy. I think I'm lucky the get along so well. 20 wks old and no sign of aggression.
I've been payin a lot of attention to them today and its my White rock in particular. The Cinnamon queen is doing a lot better today. I guess I need to get to work on gettin the rooster booster.
