I'm in Cornish, New Hampshire and looking to buy three or four pullets in the western part of the state (Hanover/Lebanon/Claremont area). We're looking for good layers, not particular on breed. Any suggestions or leads?
We have two bantams and three full size (some inherited from a friend)...
Thanks CMV.
I went out and checked 3 of my 4 birds. No bugs to be seen on the breast or around the vent. Skin looks fine. It seems like it is dirt that was too wet when they took a dust bath, because it does just crumble out under my fingers where it is clumped in the inner down feathers...
I noticed earlier this week that a few of my hens are missing the downy under feathers on their breasts and the feathers that remained are clumped together brown. I'm not sure if it's dirt or something else. The skin where the feathers are missing doesn't look irritated.
It's mud season here...
I'd say that at their age, all three in the last photo look like roos to me. The orange one definitely is, and then the barred rock type one looks it in comparison with the others of the same breed. I'm not sure what type the bird on the left in the third picture is, but compared to it's...
Hi, I'm Emily. I have 4 chickens who we got as baby chicks in April 2011.
Parsley (Black Star)
Sage (Buff Orpington)
Rosemary (Easter Egger)
& Thyme (Silver Lace Wyandotte)
As of November 5th, all 4 of my girls are laying.
My other hobbies include sewing and gardening.
I make...
I can only speak from experience with my one chick. Here's how my hen who is a SLW looked at about 2+ weeks.
From that I would guess that the first photo of yours is a hen and that the others are slower feathering in are boys. But like other say, post again in a few weeks.
Amy,
Your coop is even more amazing up close The house we bought in 2010 had a coop already so we didn't get to design it ourselves. We just got hens this spring. We have made a few predator deterring improvements. Thanks for sharing your page, I love seeing how things develop.

Emily, I just peeked at your Etsy shop, too. Nice stuff! I like the little mending kit, especially.
If you take Stage road, then you know where I live. My house is right at the intersection of Stage Road and 12A. If you were to keep driving across 12A when Stage Road ends, you'd wind...

Howdy neighbor!
Where in Cornish? I live right on 12A in Plainfield Village so you probably drive by my house regularly.
Amy
Well actually, I'm on the 120 side so we don't go through Plainfield Village that often, tending to cut across Stage Rd just above the village. I checked...
I would say that they eggs came from different hens. The base shade below the speckles looks too different to me to be the same hen. Each of my brown egg-laying hens has a different shade of brown. Sometimes they have white or brown speckles on top, but the base shade of brown remains the...

You have some lovely chickens. I don't know about the answer to your question about the rooster, but the last two in these photos look just like my black-sex link chicken. But I don't know enough about chicken breeding to know what two types are crossed to produce this result. I'm...
