Pot sizes for growing vegetables in containers

I found this article helpful when I was planning things this spring. https://harvesttotable.com/pot-and-container-sizes-for-growing-vegetable-crops/ This is my second year using 5 gal buckets for tomatoes. Drilled a drainage hole about 2” from bottom and did the self wicking reservoir thing...

In a word, how would you describe your garden as of today?

Meh. We did a large expansion this year. (Full dump truck of soil was used). Overall though, it's ok. The garden I established last year is doing quite well. Lost a few broccoli to cabbage flea beetles, and now they are bolting because the heat is ridiculous. Lost almost all the slicing...

    Congested Sound/Cough

I’ve done many different searches with different terms and haven’t come up with an answer, so I’m hoping you guys can shed some light on what is going on with one of our chickens. Linguine is a 22-24 week old Red Sex Link. She is one of 8 hens in our well ventilated coop with an enclosed run on...

What odd vegetables/fruits should I plant this year??

I’m adding to my original answer since I can’t seem to stop buying seeds. I’m also growing Asparagus Beans, Dragon Tongue Beans, Aspabroc, Lemon Cucumber, Sunberry, Haskap, Mustard for seeds, Amaranth, as well as new to me varieties of peppers and tomatoes. I’ll also be trying watermelon and...

    Unexpected cold snap!

I agree. Your carrots are definitely fine. I pulled most of mine after 3-4 weeks of frosts. If you’re worried about your lettuce, throw a sheet over it, but it should be fine as well.

Poop board or hammock or deep bedding?

@Tervish that is brilliant. I could totally configure something similar. Would save me from climbing into the coop. @aart I can get in, but bent over. Benefit of having kids is the free labour though. 😂

Poop board or hammock or deep bedding?

Yes, the lowest part is about 55”, so not very tall. We built a covered run, so the west side with the predominant winds is fine. I’m planning on building a Bermuda shutter type thing on the east side. Thank you for your help!

What did you plant as an experiment this year that you WON"T be planting again?

Yep. Compost is the best. We brought in top soil this year, then added in a bunch of peat moss. If it would have been available I would have added in manure too, but that can bring in weeds, unless it’s shrimp. Another thing you can do is leave stuff in the garden over winter to compost. Not...

What did you plant as an experiment this year that you WON"T be planting again?

I'm in zone 3 and had a meh year. We have a new garden plot with clay for soil. We did amend as much as we could, but still. I miss my old garden. We started out early with very warm weather, that turned to a month of rain, followed by a dry spell. I lost a lot of my seedlings to root rot early...

What did you plant as an experiment this year that you WON"T be planting again?

Try leaving them in the ground until after frost. Our carrots and beets were slow this year so I had only picked the bigger ones and left the rest. We went back and pulled everything about 3 weeks after frosts had started and they were delicious. Nice and sweet. Parsnips work this way too. My...

Indoor/Potted Citrus Trees: What’s you’re experience in northern climates?

We made a bunch of these for our tomato plants. They work quite well outside, but I would not recommend them if you are planning on bringing your plants inside. You have no way of knowing exactly how much water is in there, so it is easy to over fill, and that drain hole works very well.
