Thanks everyone for your replies. I am located in the US. While I did purchase the chicks from the co-op they came from Privett Hatchery. I think you all are correct. She is probably a EE. As long as she doesn't cause problems with the other chickens, I am fine with how she looks. These hens are...
We purchased chicks from our local farmers co-op and two of the three Araucana have the signature beard. However, one of them is lacking the beard and it makes me wonder if we have another breed. This is the first time we have had Araucana and I wasn't sure if the lack of beard was common. They...
I have two month old Orphingtons and Australorps. Would a 9 inch wide 15 inch Tall opening work for them to come in and out of the Coop? I am afraid that the width is too small.
Thanks for the suggestion. I have thought about that idea but with 10 chickens, I would need a much larger enclosure. I have been toying with the idea of making a 10x10 enclosure out of PVC and some plastic chicken wire.
I almost have my Coop built. It is a 6x8 coop on wheels. I was planning on free ranging my chickens but I don't want them to bother the neighbors property. I want to be able to move my 10 chickens around the yard on a weekly basis. So I would like to make a portable run or fencing to keep them...
I was planning on building a Chicken tractor myself but time is an issue right now. I have found a few folks who build chicken coops in Knoxville but I haven't found anyone around her except for a storage building place. No offense to them but I as not a fan of the construction quality to cost...
I will be getting my chicks Wednesday from the Co-op. This is my first time and was wondering if a cheap Thermometer was enough to measure the temperature in my brooder for the them? If not does someone have a suggestion on a good inexpensive thermometer?
Sorry for the non response here. I wasn't being notified of posts.
These are great Ideas. I am going to have to see if any local stores have pumpkin boxes now. We have a Sams and that seems like something they might have.
Has anyone ever used cinder blocks and made an enclosure? I have...
Well, It is becoming a beast. I am going to have to do some calculations to see how heavy this monstrosity will be. While the image does not show it, the bottom will be framed out in wood. Once I figure out the actually design, I will go back in and add the framing.
This is one of my redesigns from last night. Excuse the basic shapes as this was just a mockup. The upper area would be the Coop and the lower area would be the run. If I did my math correctly, the Coop is 24 sqft which will hold 6 chickens and the run is 48sqft which will hold 4.8 chickens. I...
Based on the link I posted earlier I redesigned my tractor but if they need 10 sqft a piece for the run, I am not sure a tractor is feasible anymore. I would like to be able to move it myself. Not require a Simi Truck. *Sigh* I guess it is back to the drawing board.
I am a new to raising chickens and have been researching chicken coops. I would like to build a Chicken Tractor to house my future chickens. The more I research the more questions I have about building the coop and what size I will need. First let me give you all some of the details.
Climate...
