I am starting with Javas, specifically focusing on a color variation that was thought to be extinct -- Auburn.
I got 40 eggs mailed from the premier Auburn breeder, Lyle Behl of Illinois. He packed the eggs amazingly well but they Were Mailed and it was my first time incubating. Of the 40 eggs...
for 4 years never had more than an opossum as predator...and never lost a chicken to a predator even though they are out all day, and I'm sometimes away at work for 12+ hours. However, it is known we have everything from opossum, raccoon, fox, coyote, black bear, and neighbor dog (who has tried...
Yes, ventilation, ventilation, ventilation. While you want to avoid direct drafts, chickens need much less protection from the cold than one would think. The wet/humidity is a much bigger hazard to their health. And it will also lead to frostbite on combs, wattles, and feet/toes.

The other egg layers in the pen are leghorns and Amerucana - thus white and pale green/blue - this one is...
That is what I'm afraid of but she is my last hen of a rare heritage breed. I have to go to Illinois (12 hours away) to replace her. There is NONE of her kind within 300 miles of me...even further.
poking around I found this - may not be helpful, on the other hand....
