I have a hen who just began setting a few days ago. Due to a squabble between the hen and another some eggs were broken. I removed the other hen and the setting hen has her own space where no others can get to her. If the eggs she is setting on are somewhat covered in egg from the broken eggs...
Crazyfarmer, if you really are intent on becoming a parent, do try the foster care system. We have 3 wonderful granddaughters who were foster kids. As a previous poster mentioned many times the foster care workers do have a good idea which kids may NOT be going back to bio parents. I know, I...
We've had about 5 inches of rain in the last 6 days and the dry nest my duck had in a sheep shelter is now a wet nest. The eggs are not submerged but many of them are wet from water running in. Should I remove most of them and add more straw to raise the nest level to let her lay a new clutch or...
My thoughts are with you and your family. I definitely know the feeling of waiting for the outcome of kids placed by CPS. ALL of our grandchildren were adopted from the foster care system and I know it doesn't happen overnight. It is a nailbiting time but well worth it. Our grandkids are a joy...
Nobody can turn as ordinary occurence in to a five alarm emergency like an OEGB. Those who have some know what I mean. The ARE noisy, but that is part of the fun. They are great and protective moms. If I could have only one breed of chickens, these would probably not be the ones (I do have to...
Do you have other older roosters? If so, your baby might wait a bit longer before crowing. I have some black australorps that are 10 weeks old and I haven't heard from them yet but I have many older roosters. It seems like the younger ones are always a bit hesitant to crow with older guys...
My brother's nephew had this condition and had the surgery. He did very well through the surgery and is now doing great! He was up and about is a very short time. His mom was really scared, but he was old enough to have a say in the matter and he chose the surgery. I'm sure that your son will do...
You can plant radishes, beets, turnips and most greens--lettuce, swiss chard, spinach, etc. I'm getting anxious to plant too, but our snow hasn't all melted yet so it will be a few days before I can get started.
Our New Year food tradition came from my maternal grandmother's family--sauerkraut and pork for good luck. Her family was French Canadian and I'm not exactly sure how this dish became involved. Anyway, everyone from the youngest to the oldest must have at least a bit of the dish. Our 4 month old...
I usually make sour cream/nutmeg cutout cookies and sticky toffee pudding. I would eat too much of both of those left to my own devices so I only make them when I know that I'll have Christmas visitors to prevent that by eating some of them. I don't make candy but have a niece who always gives...
welsummerchicks is exactly right. You need some professional help. Someone who can look at this dog and his behavior objectively. The best thing you can do for this puppy is obedience training. It sounds like you are in a bit over your head in this situation and a trainer can help. Loving this...
I would echo everyone's previous opinions and would add one more thing. Don't allow any "cute" puppy behavior that you don't want in your adult dog. It's really hard on everybody to change learned bad habits.
Her chicks will be fine. I had a Dorking hen who decided to set in the attic of our barn. Since it used to be someone's cabin the attic is about 7-8 feet from the ground. I was surprised to find her (and her chicks) pecking around in the chicken yard. She had hatched them and flown down from the...
