Using a torch, go over the bird quickly. The idea is to just burn the pin feathers off and it cleans them up nicely. And we haven't tasted any difference. Just inspect it good, so you don't miss any spots. It's real easy and fast and for just a few birds a good way to get it done.
I use a weed burner torch it is a little big but it works. After we pluck I hang the bird from my ropes in our car port and fairly quickly go over all the bird to make sure all the pin feathers are burned off. I may get a small torch one of these days but I have no other use for one. You can...
Yea just got home and she seems worse. May die tonight but if not I might just butcher in the morning. I just hope it is gut impact and not a sickness, I don't like eating sick animals. Have you ever had one of your meat birds do this? Thank you
We have a bunch of red ranger meat chicks all are about fully feathered but still have a little ways to go. One of the hens seems to be compacted her gullet is really full more than normal. I think she needs to poop or something. She is still eating and drinking but I am afraid she will explode...
To follow up on this - All the chicks are doing great. Went 5 days injecting Tylan50 and it seemed to do the trick. Thank you Realsis for your help. I recommend Tylan50 if you have a issue like i had. And injecting is not as hard as it sounds. Just in the neck when they are young under the skin...
We have had laying hens for years. This is our first year for meat birds.
And I did not write down when I purchased our 20 Red Ranger meat chicks.
So my thought was to butcher them when the roos start to crow. Would this work?
Or should i weigh them and at what size is good for this breed to...
We got some red rangers this year.
We have had laying hens for along time but this is our first year for meat birds.
So far they seem to be rockin.
I got the Rangers when i had some layer chicks (RR BO BR) that were 4 weeks old and the Rangers have surpassed them in size.
It wont be long now. I...
It can take time to make a coop but if your thrifty you can put something together for free. We made our chicken coop for free. It is an A frame eight foot tall by twelve foot wide by sixteen foot deep. Six foot is covered with metal roof and other ten is caged in run. There are two doors a...
It's up to you. You know your risk. I would try to give them as much shelter as you can tho. And covering. Our hens have a coop but are free to run around our fenced in acre. We lock them in there run, if we are going to be gon for awhile. We have been lucky and never had a chicken killed by any...
We have had some wonderful road island red girls. They have been very calm and quiet happy birds. They lay beautiful large brown eggs and are one of our favorites out of the six breeds we have owned. I am surprised that they are not higher on the ratings list.
I wonder if he has been in there before? Like as with a dog I bet chickens could get use to him if he has been there before only eating out of there feed bowl. But I would try to make your run tighter so he cant get in. ;)
Chicken math happens to guys as well. I Decided to get some new laying hens this year and retire our old hens to mother in laws ranch. Wanted to get a variety planned on 2 br, 2 r r, 2 ac, 2 bo. I knew that there might be a chance some would die so I got extra just in case. Then got to thinking...
