    Unique Chicken Postcards

This is my latest artsy project that I am working on. I just stared last week setting up still lives and photographing my chickens. I am working my way through the flock, and building "sets" specifically for individual chickens. I am just curious what you all think, and would love a good old...

Is it just me, or are ducks trickier than chickens?

Thanks Bay Goose! I will try that because I have been very disappointed in my rates....maybe 10%. It is odd because they seem to make it for 3 weeks or so and then they die in the shell.

    terrible hatch rates

they are mixed pekin/black swedish. I have kept the temp at about 99 and the humidity I don't know about. I keep the little tray in the bottom of the incubator full. The eggs are all fertile and from my ducks, so freshness isn't an issue.

    terrible hatch rates

I have been trying to hatch ducks in my incubator all spring, and am not having very good luck. I candle the eggs at about 2 weeks and everything seems to be going fine, and somewhere between 3 weeks and hatching, the ducklings die in the shell. Is there something I should be doing during this...

They seem to be doing just fine in the incubator until sometime after week 3....then I am losing most of them within a week of the hatch date.

I haven't been on here in awhile and didn't realize there was a duck section. I just have the eggs in the incubator with the rest of my eggs. It does a good job on chickens and guineas, but the ducks are another story. I will look into the misting and cooling though. Thanks.

I am not have a very successful hatch rate with ducks in my incubator. I candle them and they all seem to be fertile and developing, but very few make it out of the shell.

    Hens crop filling with fluid

I have a hen whose crop fills with muddy/blackish fluid so when I pick her up it comes running out. She's also being weird. Sitting alone in the hen house, not coming out to be fed and just generally acting odd. She's been like this for a few days now and the other hens don't seem to have been...

any reasons to *not* break up a broody hen?

i know that my hens that incubate eggs look pretty bad at the end of three weeks. they're combs turn really pale and they get the runs. i wouldn't let one set unless i wanted her to hatch eggs.

    rooster spurs

i have had a few local people here tell me they can be twisted off. the outside of the spur is just a hollow shell and the inner part is bone. grab it with pliers and twist.

Starting a new day without Smoking!

good luck to you. i need to do the same but i haven't made up my mind to do it yet. i would have thought that when the price increased a dollar a pack would have been a good time to try but no such luck. why don't you quit for me too!

    Question about insullation

the bats of insulation will work if the shed was framed for it. it comes in 16 and 24 inch widths. i would guess that it isn't so i'd go with the 4x8 sheets of foam and then plywood or osb over the top of it. i think the sheets will give you the most airtight fit.
