I have four roosters that need to join another flock ASAP. They have been handled a lot growing up, nice and curious. Raised them from chicks with lots of attention and love and so I would like them to join a flock rather than be eaten. Hatched in March 2016. None have shown any aggression...
Oh, and I found a small thermometer at chick height helped me to monitor the temp. But you can also tell a lot by the chicks' behavior-- if they are staying toward the end without the lamp and spread out more, that's a sign they are too hot. If they are huddled under the lamp, too cold. Kind of...
So roughly 1.5 feet x 3.3 feet? It may be too small for 34 chicks, especially as they grow.
I've read in other places that a small mirror can help a noisy isolated chick. They think they have a friend :)
I had a chick that I had to keep an eye on because she started to display some aggression...
Oh, and another thing to consider-- is there enough space in the brooder for 34 chicks and is the temperature where it needs to be? If it's too tight or too warm they can start to become more aggressive.
@redguinea are you using a red brooder light? That would be a worthwhile purchase, as the red light helps the chicks to not notice the blood as much.
If it's pretty serious pecking where they are imparing vision, separating them is the best bet. If you can tell who the instigator is, perhaps...
Thanks @Eggcessive! I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I saw your response. Gives me hope for the chick!
I noticed her leg is swollen, too. Not sure if it's my wishful thinking or actually true, but she does appear better today.
Hey y'all. Here is the mystery, help me solve please!
New bantam chick, very small (slightly bigger than the size of a golf ball), swollen foot. No visible cuts or scab.
We've had her for 24 hours and overall I think she is improving (she is hopping around more than when she first got home)...
Brought home eight new chickies (went in for six) today! Three RIR and five assorted bantams. One of the bantams is about half the size of the others--not sure if she'll make it (recovering from pasty butt I think). I wanted to see if I could help her make it, but I'm preparing emotionally that...
The person we were going to buy our chickies from ended up not having any eggs make it, so we are off to the farm store today to pick up 4-6 (you know, chicken math ;) ). I saw bantam straight run and, oh my, they just looked like they wanted to come home with me.
There was one bantam chick in...
I have 3 BR chickies that I bought as pullets but am trying to get better at sexing based on all the posts and pictures here. My educated guess I s that Mama Bear here is a pullet but what do y'all think? (Dark down feet, smaller dot on head, feathers coming in are dark).
She arrived at the...
We just went from a jumbo plastic tub as a brooder (worked well) to this metal one. I'm liking the taller sides and the increase in space. And the chickie's seems to like seeing their reflections as having space to run and flap their little wings.
Upgraded to be able to make a "chick jail" if...
My husband just got back from the farm supply store with our upgraded brooder supplies so that we could have a "chick jail" (I stayed back to referee the chicks just in case--he's such a good chick dad) and *of course* they are now seeming to get along.
So now I suppose we have it all set up...
What a beautiful little chick, dragonbird! It's the sweet looking ones you need to keep an eye on it seems. I'm currently building a "chick jail" for my littlest chick who thinks she can peck at her sisters' eyes. Maybe I'll have to name her Napoleon!
Thanks for the advice and reminder that...
Hey there, excited to join y'all at BYC! I'm so thankful for all the wisdom and advice I've already gleaned from reading through the forum. You've all helped me get through the first 24 hours of chick-parenting with much less stress.
I was so giddy bringing home our 3 Barred Rock chicks...
Thank you, lizsmall99 and MadamPoofyBrow especially, for this thread. I'm pretty sure my little chickie's situation is a umbilical cord, but it was helpful checking back and forth as I worried if it was worse than I though.
