Hen won't open eyes and can barely balance

Unfortunately, I just found that she had passed in the last couple of minutes... I again want to thank you both for all your help and support. I certainly learned from this experience and what to watch out for in the future, it's just very sad that she had to suffer through it.

Hen won't open eyes and can barely balance

Doesn't seem to be doing very well, and I'm worried the end may be near. She seems to having even more trouble with balance, and I'll go look at her now and she'll be tipped forward onto her beak. If she makes it through the night I'll have to try and track down the medicine tomorrow morning...

Hen won't open eyes and can barely balance

Unfortunately I haven't treated these hens yet (they were chicks in March '14). I have a bottle of Wazine that I was going to use to treat them this winter when they slowed down on laying. Then we got the cold snaps in November and December so it threw off my plans since I don't always have an...

Hen won't open eyes and can barely balance

It was probably 1/2 cup of water with most of a pack of pedialyte powder mixed in. Unfortunately I can't find anyplace open today that carries Corid.

Hen won't open eyes and can barely balance

When I first opened her mouth it looked like pretty thick clear mucous/saliva inside. It strung between her upper and lower beak when opened.

Hen won't open eyes and can barely balance

Ok, I just got her to take two little drinks of water by holding the dish up to her beak. She opened her eyes briefly, but then just closed them up again and wouldn't respond to me trying to dip her beak in the water further. I don't really have the feeding tube stuff. For worm medicine I...

Hen won't open eyes and can barely balance

I have a RIR hen that's in a bad way. Maybe starting a week or two ago I noticed that she didn't really roam around with the other hens. She would just stand still with her head sucked down looking like a little ball of feathers and seemed pretty sleepy. She's a little smaller than the others...

Free feeding versus rationed feeding? Health issues?

I was just talking with a co-worker who was interested in getting chickens herself, and she was somewhat suprised that I let my chickens free feed as opposed to rationing out how much they get. She had heard that chickens can overeat themselves to an unhealthy weight or even to death. I'm...

Do the eggs get bigger over time?

Of my four hens I now have three that have started laying eggs within the last three weeks. All three are laying what I would consider to be small/medium eggs. Do they tend to get bigger as things become more regular?

    My first egg!

Ok, so today was egg number two! When I went out this morning to let them out the new layer ran over to the corner of the garden where the compost box is and started looking for a way in, so I figured she was ready to lay another egg. I picked her up and put her in the nest box inside the...

    My first egg!

I finally got my first egg from my little flock! If I add it all up I got that egg for the bargin price of around $400 It tasted pretty good, and my two year old flat gobbled it up and asked for more. Now here's the question. I have two nesting boxes in their coop and I recently put some...

Chickens not interested in dried meal worm treats

They were pretty young chicks when I was first trying, maybe in the 4-8 week range. I tried putting them in a bowl and also just tossing them in the little Rubbermaid tote they were living in back then. I want to get them more treats, but I just didn't know if I should mess with another bag of...

Chickens not interested in dried meal worm treats

Do other find that their chickens like the dried meal worm treats you can buy from the feed store? I got a bag a while back but my chickens never seemed to interested or excited about them. Do they tend to prefer the live ones since they're move around and trigger their predator instinct? I...

Hens ignoring their roost and sleeping in a pile in the corner

I should also state that I don't think it's a temperature issue. It's getting well in to summer and the night temps here in Colorado are easily in the 60+ degree range.

Hens ignoring their roost and sleeping in a pile in the corner

I have four hens all about 12 weeks old and when I check on them at night it seems like they're always just sleeping/resting in a pile in the corner of my coop. I have a roost built out of a 2" round post raised up about 6-8" off the floor depending on the litter depth (I built it out of one of...
