Thanks for the pictures and the genetics lessons everyone. It's great to see so many knowledgeable people comment.
Disregarding the appearance of a BR roo/BO hen cross, would the offspring still display the typical hybrid vigor of a sex link chick? In other words, would they approach or meet...
I have NHR's, BO's, and BR's. I would like to get started in breeding them just for fun.
So far I know a NHR roo crossed with a BR hen will give me black sex links. I also just found out that a NHR X BO will give produce a reddish Orpington looking bird.
However, I can't find any information...

I am a huge fan of the aggressive rooster punt. Roosters are expendable. You can always buy another one or raise one up in a matter months. While a rooster does not pose a life threatening threat, he could have scratched your daughter's eyes out, or seriously scarred her in some way. I...

Dude...... You must be providing oyster shells as well as the oyster inside if you think it is supplementing them with protein.
Phyll, I would probably just buy feed with higher protein and provide oyster shell in a bowl. No need to throw around oyster shell on the ground and waste...
Has anyone compared the results of Flockraiser and oystershell to straight Layena? Assume you don't care whether it comes in pellets or crumble. Specificially I am looking to see whether it makes any difference in regards to egg size/quality/appearance.

He isn't worried about making it dirty, just the whole process of making a fire, heating water, etc.
Buster, I use the method...
I usually pull it the night before and leave water. This will get everything out of their system except the gizzard. I don't really care that the gizzard is full of corn so I don't bother pulling feed for any longer.
I think the younger they know the better. Younger kids like aren't going to have the more complex emotional development as older kids and so the sooner they make that connection that chickens=food the easier the transition will be. This is my experience with friends from families that hunt...
A few weeks ago I remember seeing a post where (I think a member here) cracked open their giant egg to find another egg also inside. Can anyone find it or have it bookmarked? Thanks.
Sunny, I know exactly what you are talking about and it's no fun to pick all the feathers off the bird. What you CAN do is take steps to prevent it. Right after the kill/bleed, take the chicken and dunk in water (lukewarm for me) and make sure all the feathers are thoroughly soaked to the skin...
