Rooster went after our little girl...

The only RIR I had experience with was VERY aggressive. He attacked DH's horse.
I don't ever want one. There are many other standard sized breeds out there that have nicer roosters.

I'm sorry to hear about your girl (glad she's all right). Your DH did the right thing.

My DH would have done the exact same thing- you gotta love daddies taking care of their little girls. Stinks that you lost your rooster but he really could have hurt her. A rooster is not worth your peace of mind. I have a juvenile roo that I'm afraid might turn aggressive. If so, into the pot he'll go. I don't want to be afraid to go in the coop and I don't want my kids to be afraid to play in the yard. Order you some more eggs, I'm sure you will get some more roos.

Aggression in roosters seems to be specific to the bird. The meanest rooster I've ever dealt with was a Buff Orpington. A breed that is usually quite laid back. I've had mean RIRs and laid back ones. I teach my kids not to chase the hens or otherwise make them feel threatened and the roosters will leave them alone. The ones that get aggressive anyway I eliminate quickly. Roosters are too easy to come by to put up with one that might endanger my kids.

.....Alan.

I too have an aggressive RIR rooster. He went after my 5 year old daughter last time he was out to free-range. My eldest is very attached to him, otherwise he'd have been roasted then and there. Now all my kids carry large sticks when they are out with the chickens and I don't turn my back on that one ever.

I am a huge fan of the aggressive rooster punt. Roosters are expendable. You can always buy another one or raise one up in a matter months. While a rooster does not pose a life threatening threat, he could have scratched your daughter's eyes out, or seriously scarred her in some way. I think you should be very happy and not at all disappointed. The rooster would have attacked again later. It would be hard to explain to your daughter after she had been injured...."Sorry, sweetie, but he is our ONLY RIR rooster!"

One the weekends I feed for my neighbors and the first time I walked into the barn after they received a RIR and 5 hens he came after me and hit me in thehead and facem pretty bad cuts. The roo is gone now and I have their one remaining hen. I never even saw him coming.

My sister's RIR roo attacked me when I was 2. My dad fried him the next day. That was 53 years ago and I still have a scar next to my knee. I am not, however, afraid of chickens. Let's see--2 chicks and a D'uccle in the bedroom, 2 hens sleeping in the kitchen till their used to the 2 in the back yard. lol

I have a Silkie Rooster that is mean as the day is long. As soon as I have his replacement, he is gone...... I have 4 Australorp Roo's and they have never attempted to attack anyone. We are constantly in and out of their cage.

I would recommend an Australorp. But, I am sure there are many other gentle breeds to consider.

My son's GF has a RIR and he is very mean.

for your hubby!

We only have a little bantam roo now, and he has gone for my kids once or twice, but he's so tiny compared to them, they can just stick a boot out and he's lost the war already. My kids are now 10 and 6, and even though they can handle the little booger, he has scratched up my son's leg once pretty bad when he snuck up behind him.
